Not sure what a gap year is, but she must be very smart to go to Harvard. I can't imagine the amount of pressure she's under to do good - everybody's watching her. I know if I would want to be in her shoes at all.

I am  also not surprised that she is going to Harvard. Since she is only 17 I am glad she is taking a gap year. being in the public eye she is under a lot of pressure to succeed. She may not know exactly what she wants to do yet.

I'm not surprised she's going to Harvard.  I hope she enjoys her year off, maybe she can travel or get a job, who knows what she will do.  It's good to take some time off get your head together and figure out what you really want to study.  One of my friends daughters went right to college and after 5 years is still there.  She has changed her major 3 times already.

I am not surprised that she got into a good school and wish her the best. I am sure she does have a lot of pressure and will have for years to come, always being in the public eye.

I did read that Harvard recommends a gap year for most students.   I think it's a great idea for some but I don't think it would have worked for me.  I think it depends on the student.   Once I stopped studying it was difficult to get back into the routine of school.   I believe it will be easier for her since her dad will be out of office by the time she begins, if she began this  year dad would still be in office.

I don't know about O'bama's daughter, I don't follow those things.

I do think a year before college is great. They need time to think independently about what they want out of life, experience a little adulthood before being thrown into the emotional and mental turmoil and pier pressure that the college environment puts out there.

I was thrown right into college after high school a very long time ago. I went to a big state university. it messed me up, and left/went home after only a few weeks.

I wound up attending a local college in my home town. It was much more comfortable for two years.  I moved on from there.

Everyone has a different need inside. They should not be pushed onto college. There are choices to consider, each person is different.

I have to agree that for many students a gap year might be a good idea.  There are some students that need some time to get their head together before such a commitment.  However, they need to  do something.  A job of some type or volunteerism is strongly recommended. They still need to have some responsibility and a direction.

Well that's wonderful. I don't know about having a year off though, that would of been hard for me to do. I went to college right after high school. Wish her nothing but the best.

I disagree with the notion she is always in the public eye. She's not. They have done a great job of keeping both of his daughters out of the public eye.

Taking a gap year isn't so bad, some people really need it. I worked for 3 years before going to college.

She has been in the spotlight, so I think taking off a year will be good to allow for her family to transition back into somewhat of a normal life; she has to be outstanding student to get into Harvard, so congrats to her!

It was clear she was heading to an Ivy league. I'm surprised she's taking a gap year however.

It's no surprise she got into Harvard.  She attends a private prep school now & has been prepping for this her entire life.   It's easy to focus on school when you have all the money & support, good support - both her parents are highly educated & value education...  that gives her an edge, all that extra tutoring & support.    Just like the Blind Side, just takes someone to care about you & push you, & it makes all the difference in the world.
