Dietary Restrictions-Substitutes for Soy Sauce
« on: May 11, 2016, 01:09:32 am »
What's wrong with Soy Sauce?  Nothing - for some people.  I have a problem if the soy sauce isn't gluten free.  Then I recently learned that; even if I buy gluten free soy sauce.....

it has MSG in it.  It might not say MSG.  If it says "hydrolyzed soy protein" on the label it has MSG in it.

I recently learned that some people use Bragg's Liquid Aminos as a soy sauce substitute because it's gluten free without the MSG.

I also found a recipe; which is considered to be a substitute:

Faux Soy Sauce

Tastes like soy sauce but without the Soy! Create for those with Soy allergies- or those in the middle of a recipe but have run out of Soy Sauce.

Combine the following items in a small saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil.

* 4 Tbs. beef bouillon
* 4 tsp balsamic vinegar
* 2 tsp dark molasses
* 1/4 tsp ground ginger
* 1/8 tsp pepper
* 1 pinch garlic powder
* 1 1/2 cups water

Reduce the heat to a simmer and let it simmer, stirring occasionally for about 15 minutes. (Simmer uncovered, as you want this to reduce to about a cup)

Do you have any dietary restrictions?

Have a great day!

Although I don't currently have any restrictions against soy sauce, being a diabetic, I should still watch my sodium intake as diabetics are prone to develop heart issues later in life. Thus I may try this recipe; it looks interesting and should not be difficult to make. The only thing I'd worry about is the bouillon; usually that is high in sodium as well, so it might not be a perfect soy sauce replacement for sodium / MSG issues... Thanks for the info!

I have to watch my sodium intake a lot. so i use the lite soy sauce and then add a little extra water.  It taste fine to me, butu hubby drags out the regular and doctors it up. Oh well to each his own. But he still eats whatever i cook and understands i can't have the sodium.  He is so easy to feed.

I have tighter diet restrictions that you do and avoid soy sauce altogether but that's a long story.  I do know that they make a soy sauce that is gluten free and msg free.  Off the top of my head I don't remember the name of the company that makes it.
