Buying a used car is always risky. My parents always said that "you're buying someone else's problem". It's probably a good idea to bring a mechanic (that you trust) along with you to check out the car...just to be safe.

You should buy it because you seem to like it and they gave you a big discount.

The most important things are to stay within your budget so you can afford the monthly payments and that the car runs well.  If you have any questions about the car, take it to a mechanic and pay the extra money to have it checked out.
Also, is the car a "certified" used car that has some kind of warranty?  Certified used cars usually do because they have been checked over by the dealership.
Do you know the Blue Book value on the car?  This could provide an indication of how much the dealership is making on the car.
If you are okay with not getting this particular car, you could stand your ground and insist that they meet your original budget.  Sometimes when they feel you are really prepared to walk a dealership will come down in price.  This is most often near the end of the month when they are trying to meet their goals.

Price around.  If you're a woman, always take a man with you; unfortunately being accompanied by a male is beneficial in scenarios such as buying a car.

We always buy used cars. I had 2 brand new cars but will never go that route again. The second brand new car I had was nothing but trouble. It had an electrical problem and another problem I can't remember (back in '75) and even though I had the car back to the dealership countless times and it was still under warranty, the dealer never stood behind the warranty. They said there was nothing wrong with the car every time. I even had an extended warranty. The did find one problem that cost $7.75 and it was covered by the warranty.

We buy used because any problems are usually corrected by the prior owners. I don't want to jinx myself, but the car we have now, we've had for 11 years with never a problem, and has over 114,000 miles on it.

It's not stressful to buy a car. I go online, do a search for the kind of car we are interested in, and check them all out prior to going to look at them. Usually we can get our selection down to 1 or 2 out of maybe 10. We always paid cash, too, and cost was a big priority along with low mileage.

I find buying a "used car" is a lot more stressful than buying a "new car" but, of course, the price is what really counts.  The only problem I've encountered at times, is, when a new car is priced at let's say $20,000 and a "certified used car" is priced at 18,999!!!  Seems to me just better off with the "new car"!!!

Hello to everyone out there in Fusion Cash world

I think that the member who bought the used car did the right thing, and I also think that they need to relax and just enjoy driving their car!

Praise God!

Anyways, when my father in law has bought cars for himself and his loved ones he always "walks away from the deal" that any cars salesman is trying to make to him and he acts as if he is not interested in the car and he always according to my husband Mario manages to get the sales people to lower the car's price.

So, good for you, you got the sales people to lower the car's price that you bought and you can feel proud of that!

While they brought the price down, it was still above what you wanted to pay. Shifty.....they still won.  :rose:

I took my son with me when I bought a used car three years ago. He had his mechanic friend on the phone, sending him pictures as we looked at it.

It helps if you can shop with someone who knows cars if you can.

Hope it all works out for you.

Used car buying, well car buying is so stressful. I'm sorta looking forward and not looking forward to buying a car in the future.

My girlfriend bought one last November and had a lot of problems. I am hoping even now that those problems are now worked out. It is a real gamble when you buy a used car. :-\

If you really like it, you should go for it. You did get some kind of discount.  :)

I watched a program on this recently which I thought was quite interesting. A guy went into a dealership only after doing an immense amount of research on the car he wanted. He already knew what price he wanted to pay for it and was adamant he would not pay a penny more. So he sat at the negotiating table seeming at most, semi-interested in the car, and suggesting a price (which was a starting price in his mind) for which he felt the car was worth. When the Dealership said the buyer was way off price, he got up from his chair and started to leave, only to be called back by the Salesman to do some more negotiating. The Salesman decreased his offer a little more, but not sufficiently. and so the Buyer moved onto plan B. His friend was waiting further down the road and he had agreed to call the Buyer friend pretending to be from another dealership. He said, "Good news my friend, we can agree to the offer of a new ........, please pop by so we can complete the paperwork". So the Buyer leaves the Dealership negotiating table and walks towards his car. The program I watched on tv stated that, if the Salesman follows you out and tries to get you back, it will be on your terms. If not, you know you have gone below his 'best price'.
