I'm an emotionally based individual and I can go into "fight or flight" mode when I'm overly stressed.  I've never been fired; but that's because I walk away when I'm close to an emotional break down.

I worked for the US Postal Service delivering mail in a high crime area of Ogden, Utah for 7 months.  Every day I prayed that I'd be hit by a train on the way to work.  No one should force their self to stay when they're that miserable.

Have a great day!

I wouldn't walk away until I had another job lined up.  Sometimes when you bite the bullet things ride out.  I think if you love your job then some of the garbage you have to deal with can be ignored, avoided or accepted.  The old 'It is what it is" adage takes part where I work.

I guess it all depends on if you really need that job to live. I rather have income and pay my bills and have a home than be happy in my job, but I would definitely be looking for another job if I'm not happy.

Obviously, when you are "over a barrel" in some way regarding your job you just can't walk away without looking at all the pros and cons.  I would sit down and make a list.  Sometimes this may help to determine just how essential and/or bad/good the job is.

Secondly, if at all possible, get another job before you just up and quit if you are the primary wage earner.  Even if the new job earns less money and benefits, something is better than nothing.   It will also provide "breathing space" while you are looking for a better job.

However, as described in some prior posts, when you are in an employment situation which is taking over your life both on and off the job and the stress is building and building, it is time to say goodbye before it affects your physical and mental health. Get that resume up to date and start applying to ANYTHING!

I think the time I would elect to walk away is if I know that I will not be promoted past my current status, or if there is no longer room for improvement/professional development.

Only after I have found another job.  Too insecure to do otherwise.
Have a wonderful day!

Thanks for all the responses. Yes, I'm hoping to find a part time or full time job that compensates better. Even though the job I have now has some difficult advantages to achieve in most jobs.... I know I could get better compensation. I would love to be able to do something that pays better part time and what I'm doing part time now. My only concern is that I might end up in a job I hate or dislike, or stressful that compensates better than now. So as others have said, it's not just about one single factor but the entire picture. Thanks again for all your input.

I walk away when I do not like the offer or the conditions of the job.

I think the time to walk away, is when you don't consider it worth your while. Whether that be that you don't think it is financially worth the money, you don't consider it enjoyable enough, you aren't stretched enough, it is too stressful, you don't like the people you work with, the location makes it not worth the hassle. When you would rather go without the cash than do the job, it's time to walk away.
