Ex-Smokers Only: How Did You Quit Smoking?

What method did you follow to quit smoking? Do you still feel ill from smoking? Some people don't quit smoking until they've already developed a cancer.

Although some places (like the Mayo Clinic) don't recommend it, my GF was able to quit using e-cigs. Since you can purchase the e-cig. liquid with varying levels of nicotine, you can gradually decrease your nicotine / chemical addition. Meanwhile the e-cig. still gives you the satisfaction of inhaling the nicotine, to help on the psychological / behavioral addiction.

I have been smoking for more than 40 years.  I have started using e cigarettes and it is actually helping me cut down.  I did try cold turkey, not the method for me.

I quit in 1999, I used the patch and had no problems with it.

I quit July 4th (my personal independence day), 1964 and did it cold turkey. However, that was about the 14th time I quit (none of the others lasted more than 18 hours) and I attribute my life (78 years and counting) to that event. Both of my younger siblings are deceased from the effects of smoking and have missed out on many of the best years life has to offer. My brother died of lung cancer at 58 and my sister from COPD at 62.

I guess that was a friend you wanted to get rid of, right?

I quit when my sister-in-law got lung cancer.  I felt if she was fighting for her life, it would be disrespectful for me to keep smoking.  I smoked the last cigarette in my pack one day, and never bought another.  Except one time I had two glasses of wine at the casino and bought a pack.  I smoked one and I couldn't breathe, my nose started running, and my eyes started watering. I left the rest of the pack by the coffee maker and walked away.  My sister-in-law has since died, and I'm still not smoking.
