Maybe to learn more about my background and see if I'm related to anyone famous.

I discovered that 32 generations back I am related to Lady Godiva, so that makes for some interesting conversation.

I'd like to do a DNA test, but not for ancestry reasons... I'm currently diagnosed for Type 2 diabetes but I do show several signs that it may in fact be a form of late onset type 1 (sometimes referred to as Type 1.5 since it shares sing and symptoms of both forms). Having a test to definitively determine which type I truly have would probably aid in the treatment of my disease.

Check with 123 and Me, I believe they have DNA testing that is for medical purposes.

what would you like to learn if you had one .

I'd like to do the Ancestry DNA test.  I'm curious as heck to see where it will lead me as far as my ancestry goes.

I have been thinking about it. A friend of mine had it done and her results were very surprising to her.

It won't lead you to your ancestry unless you add a lot of research and work along with it. All it tells you with no work is your ethnicity.

Well, I have some work put in already, but I'm at a point where I'm stuck because of the mangled mess they made of my surname over the years, lol.  I thought maybe it could lead me somewhere else.  :)
