FERRETS - Does anyone own a ferret?
« on: February 05, 2017, 10:56:24 pm »
Do you have or had a ferret? If so, where did you get it / adopt / or buy it from?

I've been thinking of getting one for my kids... it would be the perfect pet to have in the house with 2 small children. And when they get older we'll probably get a dog (and maybe a cat too).

I owned some ferrets when I was younger and lived in Europe... but here I have no idea where to look for.

I had birds as a pet... Cute and noisy little things. Don't have a pet currently

I would check animal shelter if they have ferrets available... If not check local pet shop.  The only thing about ferrets that I have heard, is that they stink... Some pet stores descented their ferrets to limit the odor, but they still have musky odor. If you don't mind washing them daily, i think they will make great pets

:) no they do not need to be washed every day.... they don't necessarily smells musky, not on a regular basis.

Yes ferrets have glands that will make them stink (when they get scared or simply excited) a little bit like a skunk...

The ferrets I had (when I was in Europe), had their glands removed as babies (poor things), and therefore they were not smelling at all..

Overall though this little cuties are amazing little pets, and in between cats and dogs. VERY smart, they recognize their names and are excellent companions.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely start asking at pet stores here.

No, but I would like a mustelid for a pet if a cat didn't mind it.

No pets at home or work because I already suffer from many allergies.

I knew a girl a long time ago that had one. I think that is the only time I ever seen a ferret up close.

Several years ago my husband and I went to the pet shop to look. I fell in love with this mix pomeranian for $1500. Of course that was too much to pay though I said I'd sell him for it. Anyway, I played with the rabbits and they all seem to congregate around me everyone noticed, but then he pointed out the ferrets. He said go ahead stick your hand in and pet one they don't bite. So I did and just before I got too touch the thing it twisted around and bit me. He laughed. Then a little girl came over picked up the same ferret and carried it off and nothing. I've never met an animal that didn't get an immediate attraction to me until then. Needless to say I haven't had much good to say about them from that experience. It really did hurt my finger.

LOL:) well the ferret must have liked you a lot, maybe thinking you were really tasty!!! :D
It is quite unusual for ferret to bite people.... yet, they used them to hunt rabbits, snakes, mice.... and they have pretty sharp canines. But overall and in general, they are pretty cute, sweet and harmless...

So definitely, animals must really be attracted to you!!! :))))))))9
