I'm not a doctor or psychologist, but I believe there is a difference between (1) a hypochondriac, (2) a person who always has had it worse than you, and (3) a person who doctor hops in order to get pain meds.  That's not to say that the "labels" cannot intersect or cross over.

I could be wrong in my interpretation, but I always thought a hypochondriac was someone who falsely believes that they have a particular condition or symptoms that they really do not have.  I don't know if the second category I listed above has an actual name (it might and I am just not aware), but I see that person as more of a complainer or exaggerator - cut from the same cloth as the "You don't know how easy you've got it. My life is a lot harder than yours in every aspect imaginable" person.  Then there is the third group just looking to scam some pills for a fix.

The hypochondriac TRULY BELIEVES they have the condition (which they do not); #2 is just looking for sympathy; #3 knows that they are not sick or injured and just wants the drugs.   As I said, I may be completely wrong - this is just my impression. I would defer to a professional who better knows the actual differences.

The law of attraction says that you get what you think about.  I don't want to be around hypochondriacs.  They are putting out the wrong vibes.  I want to concentrate on perfect health, peace, joy, gratitude and positive thoughts.  When I meet someone who is constantly complaining about health, I try to shift the subject material or get away as fast as possible.  Life is too short to concentrate on the negative.  You will only attract more negative thoughts because the Universe thinks that's what you like since you spend so much time concentrating on it.

Yes i have a niece that way, sometimes i even  think she went to nursing school so she would know more  things that could maybe wrong. she has drove some doctors up the wall. Because she  lets them know  she knows as much and maybe even more. If someone got sick in the family she was sicker. I hate to say it but i have just  almost quit calling her to see how she is because all i get is complaints never anything good. I feel bad about it but  it has gotten to the point that it gets on my nerves at times.

You are 100% right. And I do apologize for my comment above. I guess I never really looked into what people who do suffer actually feel & think. The person I talked about earlier on this thread is not a hypochondriac yet just a junkie who thinks only of herself & brags about the many different pills she can be on. I truly do hope she gets clean but I cannot be around anyone like that.

This woman is known by her first name at all the Emergency Rooms In the town they live and her kids joke about getting her a hospital number tennis bracelet for a gift one she could just always have on with her very own number.  And yes she's always taking days off to go to Dr. appts.  never have they found anything wrong with her, I'm shocked they don't kick her out, but that would be the time she'd have something real. Her house and yard also are  so clean you could eat off the sidewalks, I stopped going to her house because she makes you leave your shoes outside the door and In Minnesota in Jan. -20 shoes are pretty hard to deal with.

I have no problem with keeping my house clean but most people are not going to visit someone who makes them take their shoes off before they enter the house.  I know I wouldn't.

A hypochondriac is someone who always thinks they are sick but they aren't.  They have this or that.  Something all the time.  I have a so-worker who goes to the doctor at least once a month and then always gets a note for the next 2 days off.  And then hollers about how she is always at work.  They next time she says that I am going to call her out.

Yeah.  ::) My dad is friends with one, and this friend is only a few years older than me. There's only one "condition" of hers that I don't highly doubt (scoliosis) but the others seem made up for attention... She has that kind of personality.  :-X

Yes, I know someone..... Me. I'm not the extreme type that's basically debilitating one's entire life. I don't even know it, till I snap out of it. When, I'm extremely stressed out, like being late for class. I get there but end up getting extra late because I keep on checking to see if I locked the car! I still don't know what triggers the repeated hand washing thing but I do that too. I know it maybe annoying to the ppl in their lives but please forgive them cause if they could they'd stop for sure. Most don't even know it's happening to them.
