I've been renting an old house for a few years now and I've never regretted being a renter vs owner.  I never want to be tied to a house & certainly not this one.  Every repair, the replaced roof, the replaced furnace, and through all the water damages....it's been better to be a renter.  I like that I can pick up & go somewhere else whenever I want.

We own and refinanced once to get a lower rate and less years.  Worked out well and house was paid for when the kids started college.

I rent. The process tends to be cheaper for individuals with disabilities.

I hated renting.  You always find that the idiot living above you walks thru their apartment with hard sole shoes or boots.  I got fed up with that and purchased a Condo.  I hated that too because it's the same as living in an Apartment.  Somehow the duct work was connected to the neighbor across the hall.  I was in pure hell because the people either talked too loud (I could hear their complete conversation) or played music.  I complained to the board, they called her and she lied about playing music all night.  I had to get the hell out of that building.  I purchased a house and have had some small issues with the neighbors, but doing ok.

Wow! How did you buy a duplex at 18?

renting can be a great idea for so many reasons.  When it is time to replace a roof is when i wish i was a renter!!
I have been an owner since I was eighteen when I bought my first duplex. The payments were always considerably less than it would have  be for me to have rented in the area that I lived. This was only one consideration. With the duplexes that I owned the mortgage payment was generally paid for by my tenants. My mortgage payments, initially, were primarily interest and interest paid on a mortgage is tax deductible. I am able to sell a property, after two years, and not have to pay interest on profits of up to two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. I have had properties in Wisconsin and Colorado and never felt tied down or imprisoned by my real estate holdings. I have been looking for a property to buy near my daughter's college but have not found any good deals. My son is looking at going to college in either Florida or California and I feel comfortable in saying that we will be buying a property near his college.

I bought my home paid in full 2 years ago and am now looking to upgrade.  2 years from now I'll be buying investment properties (Lord willing).  I think there's advantages to both renting and buying but it gives me peace of mind to not have rent or mortgage.

Whether you rent or buy is very individualized and depends on your particular circumstances.  At this point in life, I am considering my options.  I presently live in a house that I have lived in since 1988.  It is paid for but is demanding a lot of upkeep and investment to maintain soon.  I am looking at buying a different home, perhaps a condo, or possibly a manufactured home or just renting an apartment. They all have pluses and minuses, but I have to look where I am in my lifespan and my capabilities and desires.

I am currently separated and my husband lives in the house we bought together 9 years ago. I am renting and paying rent. What sucks is that my rent and all involved is more than paying the mortgage and insurance/taxes, etc and my house is smaller than 'our' house. Rent is outrageously priced.

Renting is better when you're not settled in life. When you have a family and settle down, buying a house makes sense.
