I prefer to use paper bags. As was mentioned earlier, you often only get one or two items in a plastic bag which accomplishes nothing.  If you carry the bags in a car, the paper ones stand up but the plastic ones roll everywhere. If you walk with them, the plastic bags break quickly with the least bit of weight. There have been times I didn't get off the parking lot before the plastic bag would break.

I don't think it matters which bag you use as long as you recycle them.  The paper bags are better for the environment, but we are cutting down trees to make them.  Then the plastic bags are easier to use because of the handles.  People that buy lots of groceries tend to use plastic bags for that reason.  I use both, but when I do use the plastic I also use them as trash bags in the bathrooms and other rooms.  The important thing is to recycle.

Neither ... I have started to use those canvas bags ... they last forever & it is a small way for me to help the environment.  ;D
