Not that many people have access to my home, I have 2 culprits in mind, which is what I'm informing the police today.  I hate to accuse anyone but I know how much I had in savings without a doubt. I also thought about the possibility of overspending, since I did do a lot of shopping in July but I just can't see myself forgetting to deduct that large of an amount from my savings tab.

Wow thats tough hard to prove if many people are in your house. I have a few hundred  also in the house but 1000.00 that hurts. I guess the bank is better .

I have someone trusted on the look out.

bummer.  I hate when you think you can trust people and they do something like that.  Maybe call and asked them if they saw anything funny while they were there, maybe some guilt will win out.  Anyway I am so sorry, I know how hard it is to get a little ahead.

There are some banks that don't have a fee charge to hold your monies. I suggest a credit union bank they don't usually dip in your pot. I've just learn that in my checking account, I'll get charge a fee if my monies go below $600.00 before the end of the month! I was up set but the fee isn't much & this credit union doesn't charge much but I'm looking around for something better. I saw some w/no required amount to have a checking account opened but no interest to help your monies grow. Not that the interest in my bank is good, ii's  really low. Sigh, I should go switch to something better but just being lazy right now! I suggest, with or without interest, find a bank that won't charge you to hold your monies!

That is sad, we keep  visitors on the front porch now.   and locks on the back side of doors where people can not go to other place in the house.

Thanks, I got a safe yesterday.  It was one of those things I knew I needed but kept putting off- such as a fire extinguisher, which I also put in an order for.  Lesson learned.

I am so sorry this happened to you ... I feel your pain .. I've been thru a similiar situation.

Glad to hear you got a safe .. That is probably something I need to look into getting as well

I am sorry that happened.

Several years back, when cash register receipts kept your debit/credit card number easy for anyone to read, someone got my tax return that I had deposited at my credit union.

They stole over $1,200 of my tax return from me using my debit card number.

When I went to the credit union to talk to an officer, they pulled up my debit card number on their computer, and we could see charges coming in on it as we both sat there and watched!!  The credit union refunded my money right away, and started pursuing the guy.

.... they had bought a very pricey gym membership out of the country (think Bahamas), and some antique furniture on e-bay etc. Fortunately, they left a trail that way with an address.

Between Visa, Pay Pal, and my credit union's vigilance they caught the guy.

I needed that tax refund badly.

I now keep every receipt I receive that I use a card (even debit).  I shred them when I have a stack. These folks work so hard to cheat, and always several steps ahead of most of us.

Sorry for your loss. Hide, hide your cash better. Don't leave where a snoopy person can find it on the way to the bathroom. They know where to look for an easy find.  Pay attention to where visitors are in your home.

This type of person knows where to look. Never tell any one you have cash, or keep it in your home. They can come back later, break in and search when you are gone.

That is so terrible! That's a large sum of money to have stolen. It is especially bad when the thief is someone you know. I hope the police can help you catch them.

I am so sorry this happened to you. You can always file a police report and tell them all the visitors that were in your home and hopefully they will start an investigation. That's a lot of money to be missing! I have a secret stash too that I don't put in the bank (it's the "oh crap" emergency money)... I wish you luck and hopefully someone will have a good conscious and will return it.

There are not many people I trust, but I would never leave that kind of money in my house.  I would definitely open a bank account where you know that it will be safe.

Why put your money in a visible place where your money can be taken. Why tell anyone that you save money and where it's being kept?  You put temptation before whoever stole the money, and I don't think you will ever get it back because you don't know who stole it.  Good luck.

I know what you mean. I bought myself a small safe. It's probably not the most secure thing in the world, but it should discourage any light fingered visitors. You can get one in Target/K Mart for around $25/$30.

Google JediJohnnie and May the Force be with you!

do you have an idea of who it might be, narrow it down first so you don't accuse the wrong person, and the safest place for that amount of money is in the bank

I just counted my savings and someone helped themselves to a stack of my money!  It was in what I presumed to be a secure place, but I recently had visitors.  I hate to blame anyone but I am not mistaken in the amount that I am supposed to have and the amount that I have now.  What should I do?

Well first off do not accuse the "visitors" of stealing your money.  Maybe you made a mistake.  This is a good reason not to "hide" large amounts of cash at your house.  I really don't know what to tell you to do.  If I was absolutely sure the money was gone I might say something to another trusted family member.  See what they think.  If you had a stash of cash why would they only take $1000 and not take all of it?

Put the money in the bank instead of having that much laying around.  Don't invite people over.  Hide the money in the back of your closet in a old pair of shoes in a box and put some junk on top.  That money is gone, sorry.  Whoever stole it will have to deal with the karma.

First off Karma is not real.  Second, if your house burns down the cash is gone.  If you are going to keep that much money at home then put it in a safe or a lock box.  And hide the lock box.  Would also ask if the OP has kids?  Maybe your kid took it.  Don't just assume the house guest stole it.  Think before you act.  How would you feel if you visited family or friends and money supposedly turned up missing.  Would you be okay with being accused of stealing the money?
