Kids and violent video games

My answer to this one is no, but I don't think it helps.  Kids are going to be kids-when I was growing up we had toy guns and played "commando" outside, but we didn't end up growing up to be criminials!  It's all in how the parents raise their kids.  Without proper discipline, kids learn that they can get what they want just by taking it, then the video games reinforce that you can use violence to take what you want.  It all starts with upbringing, though.

That is alot of our problem as a country and the crime, kids are not like beaver and wally anymore. they want to be bad, get into trouble, do things they see, their role models are these video games, these rappers, this televions and these movies, and what is on all of this stuff, violence, so they want to act violent, not be good and stay out of trouble. use to be fights break out in school, now it is guns, whose fault I ask is that, they see it on the media and say, hey I will just do that, take care of my problems, they need parents to step in, and talk to them, tell them it is not the end of the world, the problems they are facing now, communicate with them, take time out of their busy schedule and shut off the video game, shut off the televison.

i do my kids are not a loud at all to play vidoe games at all they are out side more then they are on the computer they dont even have a video consel of any sort i got my oldest son a v smile and he would reather be out side then playingit so i think it is a wast of time and they are to controlling world of war carft is the second reason for devorice in married couples and that is horable

I don't think they do.. I think parents and kids are using this as an excuse because they always think their child is an angel and dont want to take fault for raising them wrong.

I don't think the video games cause kids to be violent. I believe somewhere in them is a suppressed tendency lying dormant, just waiting on something to set them off. Kids today are inundated with horror in the media and I think they have assimilated these images and justifications into what they know as life. Its only worse if the kid has points against him like abuse, neglect, no sense of family, and no idea of what life is outside their own perceptions.  I think, too, that there are kids who cannot clearly define the line between reality and fantasy. So they identify with these games as being cool. They begin thinking that they have control and power just as the characters in the games. I have a child such as this and thankfully he has grown out of that stage. We had to monitor his activity closely because he "became the characters" he was watching, even innocent ones like Luke Skywalker or Superman. As an adolescent, he wanted to fly and asked his father and I how we thought Superman went about doing this. He has severe ADHD and this mixed with the television and games which he couldn't understand for a long time why we didn't think they were real, caused him to perceive the world very differently than most. Kids tend to become desensitized to all the things going on around them. OK. That was the long of it. The short of it is this is a very complex and open-ended topic and one I think must be addressed on several levels before laying the blame anywhere. A hard question to answer considering the free access kids have these days to almost whatever they want. They usually find a way to get it.

I think our kids get too much violence from television and movies, and if you don't let your kids watch these programs, you don't have to worry, cuz they will get it from the kids at school who's parents did let them watch these programs, so their really isn't any way around it, they are going to learn about the world one way or another, the best we can do is teach them what is wrong and what is right and that is our job as parents. We cannot shelter them from something they are going out into eventually.

I think they can give kids ideas for voilent things to do to others but I feel that a person has to have evil intentions in their hearts to be able to pull it off. I beleive that comes from how they were brought up.

No. I believe that as long as you're raising your child the best you can and giving them a solid foundation, they will make better decisions. If they play games with violence, that doesn't mean they will become violent. As long as they understand the difference between right and wrong/real and fake, then a video game won't affect them.

It's obvious that external factors in a child's life will affect them, but good parenting is going to be a stronger factor than any video game. You just have to teach them the right way. I always say I won't do this or I won't do that but what if you won't buy him that mature game but his friend owns it and they play it all the time? You just have to lead him/her in the right direction the best you can.

The lack of parenting and discipline is the problem.  The fact that nobody listens to these kids is the problem.  The fact that it takes a school shooting or some heinous act of violence for a kid to get some damn attention is the problem.


First it was books, then it was music, then it was movies, now it's video games.  They blamed Eminem and Marilyn Manson for Columbine...are you freaking kidding me?  They proposed Counter Strike as a strong factor in Columbine and Virginia Tech...are you freaking kidding me? 

Perhaps one day we'll actually start addressing the issue and stop scapegoating random, unrelated parts of entertainment.



Anyone who says video games are a significant cause:  Do you truly believe that if video games were removed from the world there would be no more school shootings or other random acts of violence amongst teenagers?  (If you say yes to this, I'll really have to doubt your thought processes)

I agree i think it goes beyond games it's tv and every thing alse out there also even things they learn in homes or how parents treat them
