Would you rather forego giving gifts
« on: November 18, 2017, 10:48:57 am »
If everybody would be on board, would you rather forego the whole gift-giving thing for Christmas?
I certainly would. It stresses me out and actually strains the time we should be enjoying together because we are all out hiding from each other buying things none of us really wants. Do you enjoy it or would you rather just have quality time with loved ones?

Something that my family has started now that most of us, kids, are out of the house and have full time careers is to give gifts of experience.

Basically, we gift opportunities for concerts, spas/salons/massage, cruises, wine tasting/vineyard tours, driving lamborghinis around a drift course, and more. We tend to use this approach for pretty much all gift giving. We usually use websites and apps that have couponed deals to maximize money saved and opportunity for bonding.

It's actually been awesome. I've noticed that I've saved money shopping for gifts and I'm out building stronger relationships with those I love and experiencing life. It's a neat idea and it works for us.

Regardless of the form of gift giving, just know that it's the love behind it that makes the gift. I wish you a stress free experience! Good luck and Happy Holidays!  :angel11:

Oh, heck yea! Shopping all year round is the most advantageous thing to do. Take advantage of year round deals  :glasses-nerdy:

Not me, I love giving gifts.  I enjoy the entire process of trying to find a near perfect gift for each person I give a present.  I wouldn't mind in the least if folks wanted to forego giving me a gift but I enjoy giving so I'm not giving up on it.  I can understand if someone finds it stressful but I find great joy in shopping for gifts, especially now that so much can be done online.  Like the others have said, I start early in the year which makes it easier economically and it spreads my joy out throughout the year.

We only buy for the kids in both my family and my husbands. His family forgoes the actual gift, but they do buy one single $25 gift card then do a thing where all cards go in a bag and you draw one out. That way you get to use the card for what you want and it's still a surprise because you never know what kind of gift card you will get.

That's a really great idea.   Sounds fun.  A lot of the adults in our families have already purchased some gifts for this year but I think I'm going to suggest that for next year.

There is more happiness in giving then receiving.Especially if it was given because one wanted to rather then feel they had to.

Receiving the gift that way also applies.I am a security guard for a gated community and make tips around Xmas time.I appreciate others giving them to me cos of my service....NOT cos its Jesus birthday.

Bible doesnt support 12/25 as his birthday anyway. And command in bible was to memorialize Jesus death...NOT his birth.

I am the opposite here. I love the together thing also we are the same there. I love going shopping thinking what they want. I love the Christmas food. I make sure I shop/save enough for the dinner beast and all the snacks. I like glitter of our holiday too. Really now, the holiday spirit is a present in itself. Put a little love in your heart. So, I sure hope you do get the Christmas you want.  :peace:

I would be ok with that however not while my grandchildren are young. I love seeing their faces with those big smiles as they open their gifts.

I would - I'm a giver, and very generous, but yeah, it can get stressful and time-consuming...I prefer to invest time in experiences and family time, etc...

I could do that. For me shopping makes the holiday stressful. I would prefer to do gift cards.

:present:  There have been years in my 64 years that we didn't exchange gifts mostly due to lean financial years and then years we did exchange presents.  I say to heck with it.  My favorite family members are deceased - my younger son is in a relationship I can' t tolerate and my older son has enough money to buy whatever he wants.  If I want something I could probably buy it or do without it.  I have no heart for Christmas left.  So we will see if I change my mind but right now it is Bah humbug.
