I grew up in the 90's. My dad was a baby boomer and he and his family grew up in poverty. Every single one of his brothers and sisters (including himself) worked their butts off (with no help) to put themselves through college and get a great job. All of them are extremely well off now. My dad never gave us an allowance, however all we had to do was ask for something and we got it. Somehow we didn't grow up spoiled. (well, we were spoiled but we were grateful for the things we were given and we really didn't complain about wanting more.) I have spoken about this very thing with a lot of my generation and most of us were raised that way.

I really don't think that was helpful. My family at least instilled values in us. Every weekend our family would get together and clean the house. However, we were not ready to face the real world. I went off to college and applied for a credit card. That didn't go well at all. I am now in my thirties and am not nearly as well off as my dad was at my age. I know it's a lot harder now than it was back then to have a great career but I think a lot of it had to do with the way we were raised. My parents didn't have anything growing up and they wanted to give us everything they didn't have. Very noble intentions, but not very practical.

My friends that were raised without have made much better life choices than i have. All of my rich friends would not be where they are now if their parents hadn't bailed them out financially a few times.

I grew up on a farm.  I was one of seven children.

We didn't get an allowance.  We had chores that we were expected to do outside....My sister and I had to fill the area in the front of the stantions for the milk cows.   We also washed the milkers and bulk tank.

We all helped with field work....picking up rocks, walking beans, chopping thistles.  I drove tractor for the baling of hay.

It was a great childhood!

At age 16, I got $1.50 a week. With that money, i had to buy gas for the car and any snacks and other junk food at the local hangout. my best friend and i also had a job at the local farmer's market at the candy stand (that's where I gained weight) because we were allowed to eat all the candy we wanted. My downfall was chocolate covered pretzels, peanut butter cups and butter creams. We were paid $12 a week working Thursday evenings from 6-11 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. i worked there for 4 years and never missed a day. I bought my first winter coat with the money and I was so proud to do it.

I don't believe I ever got an allowance. I just begged for stuff when I wanted it. My relatives say I was a spoiled brat.  :-\

I think people always say that about "only" children. Actually, I'll bet lots of "only" children wish they were not ("only" children, that is).

I started out at 25 cents at age 9.  When I left home at age 14 I was getting 10 dollars a day.  The last time I got allowance was in 1979.

Unfortunately, I never received an allowance from my mother. She was a single parent raising me while holding down a full-time job at a group home. However, she always made sure that I got the things I always wanted. Thanks Mama!

I did not have an allowance as a child or teenager. I only pay my own allowance when I began working in the real world as an adult.
