My door partly opened and one of my cats decided to go out but couldn't get back in until I got up,but she learned her lesson and ran back inside.

Hmm, this post has turned a little sour. To answer your question, no. Even "outdoor" pets should have some sort of protection when it gets below freezing. Somebody mentioned cows and horses - they are in stables and barns at night and generally have access if they want to go in during the day.

Of course it will turn sour. When you start a thread calling every one an A--hole that has outdoor pets then you are going to face some opposition. My pets are all inside but I have defended the ones being attacked. The house I use to live in I could not bring my dogs inside. I have also had dogs that refused to not use the bathroom in the house. I can't have a dog in the house peeing and pooping every where. I can afford to tear out walls and redo floors. The dog I have now doesn't use the bathroom inside. He never has.

I am the one who mentioned cows. You say well they have a barn. Some do. Some do not. I would bet 99.99% of the people who had outdoor pets have some sort of house or a covered porch or shelter for the animal. They are not just out defending for themselves.

There is a field I pass when I leave my house and the cows are just in a field. There is no barn. Just a field. Cows were also meant to stay outside. If you have 30 plus cows you cannot have a barn big enough for them to stay inside. They are COWS.

I hope there aren't too many pets out in the cold; I overheard a conversation at my kids' school day before yesterday about animals perishing because of the weather.

I never liked that. When I was younger, animals were always outside. I never had a dog house. I think it is mean

We had a dog once that from the time we first got him at 6 weeks old, never wanted to be in the house. It was too warm for him. He was Golden Retriever/Golden Lab but he had a double coat so thick that you couldn't find his skin and it was long hair. He looked more like a Pyrenees or even sheepdog type hair.   Brushing helped a little but I would get enough fur off him to make sweaters. Too bad I didn't know anyone who made yarn from animal fur like they do now.

He hated being inside. In the middle of winter, he's lay in the snow. In the summer, i would took him to a groomer and she couldn't groom him with the thick fur, so I had him shaved. He was so happy that I started doing it once every year. He loved it. Of course, it would grow back by winter.

Nope. It has been super cold where I live, just 2 degrees the other day, so I pray everyone keeps their animals inside.

People who leave animals outside are stupid, where i'm at it's -45 windchill. There are feral cats around where I live and I see one all the time I've lived here 6 years and the cat i see has a pack of kids and their kids and so on. She is pretty smart for old girl lots of them have been carried off by eagles ! I started feeding her when i first moved in BAD idea she had lots of friends !! Had to stop when her extended family took up camp under my shed.

People who leave animals outside are not always stupid. Kind of a biased blanket statement to make when you don't know all of the facts about their situation.  I have cats outdoors. Multiple cats.  They started out feral but we have fed them and they've slowly come around.  There are so many that there is absolutely no way we could bring them all in.  We trap, fix and release as often as we can but that runs into amounts of money that is borderline impossible to come up with at times.  We also have a 13 yr old male cat that has NO tolerance for other animals and ends up hurting them if we can't separate them fast enough.  The cats are not outside because we are stupid, it's because of the circumstances.  What we do is this.  We keep food out for them as much as we can.  We have an electric water bowl so that they have water that isn't frozen.  We have a huge dog house complete with blankets to keep them warm, we have a cat tree with things on it they can go into on our carport and we also have 3 different carpeted cubes and a homemade cat house out of a storage tote with blankets in it.  These animals are going to be out there whether we do anything for them or not but we at least try to help them make it through the winter. It really is rude to insult someone when you say yourself you're feeding animals...but aren't bringing them in yourself.

Mine don't stay out there for long. They bark to get out and bark to get in.

Just checking back, since someone on here is afraid of being outed. I want to make sure you are all aware of this person because they must be doing something they shouldn't be doing. At first they said they didn't want to chat because they also didn't want to get outed in my space, by making way for another "officer" type person. Because once one enters, you can link them all back. You don't really cover up for them. Hmmm... Did you stand at the door and knock? aka Beg? Please, please, may I come in? No! Did I invite you in? No! Do I feel you have honest intentions? No! Stay out! My room will remain messy and my housing not highly desirable to prevent you and others from desiring to come in. I want you to go ewe gross to an extent. Stay out. Got it? You don't have permission to practice in my state. You are not authorized. You are not truly protecting, you are not with me. You are abusing your status. Plus, you need to eat your own cultures ethic foods and come into that. ;) Even sweepers can't come into your home the way you are doing this. You can't just pop into people's private space the way you  are. I didn't leave a door or a window open for you. It's clearly way too cold outside now for that! Stay away! People that are Spanish and have Spanish names and don't eat Spanish food are weird. Super weird. Even in the last degree.
