Looking for work
« on: May 08, 2018, 08:20:17 pm »
I'm a college graduate in California and I can't find work (only minimum wage jobs). I have debated looking for jobs in other states, but I'm just not too sure where to start. I have family in Virginia, and I'd like to probably move out there. I've never done anything like this, but I'm thinking about just contacting a Temp agency out there and seeing if they can find something for me...then just driving across country. Any other suggestions/ideas are appreciated.

You don't say what your degree is in, or if you have any experience, but what I did the last time I couldn't find a suitable job was start my own company and hire myself.

There is one plus side to taking a drive out there , you can always go back !  I'd make a long trip out of it and see what towns along the way had to offer, I can tell you the Town of Rochester Minnesota is on the move and has allot of jobs opening. The State and city are dumping Millions into the area in a project called " Destination Medical Center "  Mayo Clinic is great but they are going to make this the Best in the world ! The City is growing like weeds ... got friends who own a after market car and truck toy shop so to say  in Rochester they start people out at 18.00 a hour. Only down side is winter !

Great advice.  Easier said than done, but it's possible, especially when you do the research and take the baby steps today.

A lot depends on what your degree is in and what other work you have already done. When I changed industries after the economic collapse years ago, I had a lot of success working with a temp agency. Try that!

I make that suggestion because that is exactly what I did and it's not as had as most people think. All you need to do is uncover a niche where a group of people have a problem and create a solution.

Driving across the country to work with a temporary agency would be foolish. It is a temporary agency. The job may last 2 days it may last a few weeks. And most are not temp to hire. You may be a college graduate but you are not going to start at the top. You will start at the bottom and work your way up. You first job is probably going to be close to min wage. What is the min wage in California? 7.25? Or do they have a state wage? You may have to take something you do not want to do for a while until you can find something better. I have worked several jobs I absolutely hated.

And this is more foolish than driving across the country to work for a temporary agency. Starting your own company is not that easy. Especially if you don't have the money to start it up. And you have to have something to do that people are going to purchase your goods or services. And it also has to be something that 40 people are not already doing.

A few years ago in my town everybody and their momma started a car detailing business. So basically they washed cars and called it a business. These days there are probably 60 yard mowing services in my home town which is actually pretty small.

I have heard this so many times it is sickening. Oh just start your own business. It's kind of like the referrals you harp about. Getting a ton of referrals is not that easy especially ones that are active. And starting your own business is not that easy either.

The temp agency really depends on where you live. There are a ton of them in my area and most of the jobs pay $8 an hour or less and they are not a temp to hire so you are always working a dead end job with no benefits, no insurance, low pay, and get treated like crap. If you are in a big town I guess it could be different.

That sounds like a possible plan, also that area has a lot of federal jobs, depending on what your degree is in; while you are temping you could also check the local school districts and apply  to substitute teach if you don't mind working with kids, that way you are not locked in to anything and would have the flex ability to continue to look for something you are really interested in and have some income coming in at the same time. Good Luck.

Do what you think is best for you. I hear living expenses are very expensive in California.
