Do you do your own lawn or hire someone?
« on: June 04, 2018, 03:56:44 pm »
I'm finally breaking down and hiring someone to mow my lawn. I just hate the chore. It takes a lot out of me physically. I can never get the whole thing done in 1 day. I can afford the $50 a week I'm gonna be charged to have the lawn mowed so I've decided just to hire someone and forget about it. I just hope he shows up because I've already hired 1 other guy and he completely flaked on me. Don't quite get how you can make plans to have your lawn mowed, then not have the person show up at all.

Going rate is thirty dollars in Colorado, for a standard sized lot and that includes trimming with edging thrown in once a month. My son is working for a landscaper and is paid fourteen dollars an hour to cut lawns, change out sprinkler heads, edge, and trim. They also pull out dead bushes and weeds. He does our lawn each week for a twelve pack of beer (a little bit more expensive but it keeps him from drinking my supply). The only other condition is that the rest of the family has to pick up the dog poop which, with two golden retrievers, is about a ten minute chore.  My son will cut lawns on the side and has six steady customers that pay him thirty dollars a week. He should have some good coin saved up by the time he goes back to college in August. This is good because he is taking his car up and will need money for gas.

Have thought about since my husband is getting older but he refuses to let me even consider it.  He said it is not worth money and that they never do the job right.  Says he enjoys doing it but I see what it takes out of him when he is done.  I usually try to trim and edge to help him out or do it when he is out.  We will see what next year brings.

I do my own and I have a lot of plants and trees.  I even trim trees myself after the hurricanes knock them down.  lol.

I pay $45 a month ...  $10 a week for mowing the front lawn weekly + $5.00 to shape my hedges as they grow in.  The front law is on a hill so it's gotten tough to mow.

We take care of the backyard it's lawn is flat then goes up in a hill with a bunch of trees.  I like to do the backyard gardening, it's like a zen kind of thing.

We just bought a house and do not have a mower plus I am allergic to grass. We pay a man $20 a week to mow, weed eat, and blow off the sidewalks. It's a good deal for us.

We have been doing it but it is getting to the point that we are having a hard time keeping up with it.  5 acres is a lot to mow and trim!
Have a wonderful day!

I enjoy working in the yard cutting the grass, edging, putting down fertilizer.  It's one of the ways I relax so I really miss it in the winter months.  I like to cut it once a week but this year it's been every four days - something extra must have been in the fertilizer this year.

We have a company cut our grass and have used them about 5 years.  We have 1 1/2 acres. The guys come once a week cut grass, weed wack, and blow grass off driveway and walkway to house.  Cost $56 a week  they really do a great job. I can’t do it anymore and husband works long hours and doesn’t want to spend weekends doing the lawn

Both.  My husband does landscaping on the side.  I've been known to help him in the past.  (which is miserable for me since I'm allergic to a ton of outside stuff) sometimes I'm fine other times I'm a mess.  It really depends on what is in season.  I've really backed away from the lawn stuff.  He loves it - it's great exercise and he get's his farmers tan on.

My husband cut our lawn, hiring someone cost too much.

I have never loved or even liked cutting the lawn.  I have a lot of allergies and often being out in the middle of grass being cut brings them on so the remainder of the evening is miserable.  Also, at 69 years old, I decided about 7 or 8 years ago I was done with it.  Of course, I've been married several times and had a few boyfriends who often cut the grass for me.  That was a lot of help, both physically and financially.
Where I live I have been paying $30-$35 for mowing and trimming over the past few years.  The larger companies seem to get less detailed as the summer wears on and they pick up more and more customers.  I finally had to let one go when they were doing what I thought was a real half-a**ed job.  This summer I have been lucky to have an older vet who just wants to do about 15-16 lawns per week and views it as a chance to be outside and treat his PTSD.  So far, he seems to take pride in his work!
