Pets to the Vet
« on: June 28, 2018, 06:21:06 am »
If you had to take your dog to the vet and you found out there was an issue that could be cured but the cost was around $700 would you pay that? Without treatment the dog would die.  Slowly.  And the death could be painful.  Would you find a way to pay the $700?  Or would you just let the dog die or put it to sleep?

I chose to pay the $700.  Treatment is taking place now.  But I am catching a lot of flack from some people who think I should not have paid that much "for a dog".

Personally for me it would depend on the age of the dog.  If you have a pet, that comes with responsibility.  And finances to take care of that pet properly is are part of the responsibility.  Obviously you have the funds to cover the cost of procedures.  You are the owner of this pet and the one that loves it more than any other outsider could ever relate to. So you did what you had to do.  And that's your business.   Now if you're married and the $700 is both you and your spouses $$$ than the conclusion and agreement would be between the two of you... so bug off to those giving you flack.  You're not owing them $700 right!

If those people have the audacity to tell you that what you did was wrong, perhaps, reconsider whether those people should be in your life.

I have paid that and more for my furry family. Pets are family, and they trust us to take care of them. I love my pets, and my pets love me. They bring me more joy and comfort than any human being I have ever known.

If you listen to other people, you will regret it, and will have this unimaginable guilt that will never go away. By then, the deed will have been done. However, I doubt you will ever regret paying the money to help your pet.

Just take the flack. Pets are worth the heat.

Pets are very expensive to care for and that is the reason I don't have one. I know people who have spent thousands of dollars on their dogs.

I have paid much more than that. As a pet owner you are responsible for their care, and that doesn't end at buying a license and dog food. Beyond that though, they are family and I would be disturbed at anyone who would suggest to me that treating a family member to avoid a slow painful death is not worth $700.

The only situation I could even conceive of is if the dog is ancient and you are in dire financial straits, where paying such a bill would cause you to have to take food out of your childrens mouths. In which case you should put the dog down. I wouldn't relish that either but it's certainly kinder than just allowing him to suffer in order to save cash.

I have, unfortunately, paid much more at one time for vet care.  I had a dog who had cancer and we drove to Philadelphia 60 miles one way for chemo every week.  We then drove there for radiation everyday for 3 weeks straight.  He then had surgery.  He alone cost tons of money, but he was not the only pet we encountered huge bills for.  I believe pets are your responsibility, you have to provide food, water, housing (indoor), and vet costs.  I fully understand some people cannot afford a lot of money for vet bills, but please at least try to help them.  If you cannot possibly pay a amount for their care, please put them down and don’t let them suffer a painful, long death.  As far as you countrygirl, don’t let people tell you what to do or how much to spend.  I applaud you for paying that, you are a great fur mommy.

Elvisdo:

Me too! I have a neighbor who had a cat with a dangling tooth that needed to be removed, and she said she could not afford to take care of him (although I saw a box for a big screen television outside her house).

My friend and I paid for the cat's tooth to be fixed, and he was much better, UNTIL she moved (she was the mother staying with an adult daughter). Then, when she returned, a year or so later, she had another cat because the one she took with her got hit by a car.

I was crushed. I think it bothered me more than it did her.

I love all animals. People? Not so much.

I think it's an individual's right to decide if it's worth it to them.  Some see their pets as pets.  Some see their pets as family.
