If you had to take your dog to the vet and you found out there was an issue that could be cured but the cost was around $700 would you pay that? Without treatment the dog would die.  Slowly.  And the death could be painful.  Would you find a way to pay the $700?  Or would you just let the dog die or put it to sleep?

I chose to pay the $700.  Treatment is taking place now.  But I am catching a lot of flack from some people who think I should not have paid that much "for a dog".

First of all, it is YOUR money!  Secondly, you stated some key facts that would have definitely made me get the treatment.  Those words involved "treatable," "death," and "painful." I could not allow a painful death to happen.  Not over $700!  Most pets are part of the family if you've had them any time at all.  How could someone allow a beloved pet to just die for $700?  Good for you!

I think you chose wisely...  a pet is a member of the family & needs to be taken care of especially if the pet can recover & go on to enjoy life.  $700 is actually a reasonable rate for a life saving treatment for a dog.  You did the right thing. I wish the best for you & your dog.  I hope your doggo lives a full and happy life. :)

In my opinion, it all depends on how much the care costs versus how much affect it has on the animal's quality of life. We had a cat put down several years ago rather than pay for an expensive procedure which was not likely to improve her quality of life much if at all.  It was a difficult decision, but it was one that the vet ultimately agreed with.

We have another cat who does not require any specific medical procedures, but does require regular prescription treatments for breathing issues - has needed them since she was newly rescued at 11 weeks old and she is now 8+ years old.  I have no idea how much we have spent on her treatment over those 8 years since it has been regular and ongoing, but it is definitely a lot more than the single procedure would have cost for the one we euthanized. But payment has also been spaced out rather than as a lump sum.

The other main difference is that the breathing treatments have greatly improved her quality of life. For a brief period we actually has her on an inhaler if you can believe it (there's video proof of it linked there if you don't believe it), but my wife ultimately decided to switch her to a pill instead.

It's expensive to have a pet and that's the reason i don't have one.

I don't have any pets but I hear they are like family and you do what you can to help them if you have the means.

I have had him 12 and a half years.  The other option was to treat him for heart failure and basically watch him die. He was already struggling to breathe.  Eventually I would have had to put him to sleep.

He is doing so much better today. He is like a different dog. But I still can't let him get excited or run.  He has to be kept completely calm and relaxed for the first 2 weeks. Then for the next 2 he can have more movement but it is a month before they can resume normal activities.

Wow.  Our vet is awesome. He called day before yesterday to see how the dog is doing.  He doesn't rip people off. The dog clearly had a problem.  And in my research I have seen all his symptoms pointed to exactly what he was diagnosed with.  And everything that has happened is exactly in line with what I am reading and what is happening.

It's really not their business how you spend your money. Since you were able to find the money within your budget to do it, then that's all that matters. And I can certainly think of worse ways to spend cash than for the humane care of a beloved pet.

Well, I didn't really "find" the money.  That is part of why I was criticized.  Either way, he is doing a lot better and I do not regret the decision at all.  Even if he had died I still would not have regretted it.  I had to try.  I have done treatment that cost a lot before when the vet said there was little hope.  I had a dog that some stupid woman poisoned.  The vet said there is a treatment but I will be honest not a lot of hope here.  START THE TREATMENT.  He pulled thru.  I don't regret any of the money I have spent on my pets thru the years.

I treated a cat with asthma for 3-1/2 yrs with an inhaler (she still need a pill too but greatly reduced the amount).  It gave her 3-1/2 very happy yrs she would not have had.
