Home insurance
« on: June 29, 2018, 04:56:19 am »
My Home insurance just canceled my policy due to missing a payment. I really don’t want to rejoin this company because they over charge yet they don’t offer flood insurance! Hello, I live in Florida & floods happen on a daily bases here! They recently merged (ASI) with Progressive so I don’t know what’s going on but progressive sent me the company’s yearly fire alarm batteries(expensive batteries at that) yet I’ve been kicked out of their policy! Please can any FC members’ give me recommendations on decent affordable home insurance out there! I would be eternally grateful for your help on this issue! Hurricane season has already begun!🙏

I have Progressive as a car insurance, but not for the home. It's not a good car insurance either.

I don't live in Florida so I don't know what is available where you live. If you miss a payment they have a right to cancel your policy. Heck, mine called me the day before mine was due and demanded to know where they payment was. Well, DA, it isn't due until tomorrow and I mailed the payment over a week ago so it is probably on somebody's desk waiting to be opened!  They got it the next day. smh.

They do the we don't cover this and this so you have to purchase a sep policy. Kind of like health insurance no longer covers cancer. You have to have a "caner" policy. If I have healthy insurance then it needs to cover ANY health issue.  The same with home owners insurance.  Mine sent me a letter and told me that my roof was too old and needs to be replaced and they won't pay for the full value to replace it unless I put a new one on it now.  If it weren't such a hassle I would switch to another company but do not want to fool with having an agent come root thru my home deciding what HE thinks it is worth.

Have the home insurance with the mortgage payment. So they pay it once a year. Had state Farm now with safeco.

It still wouldn't matter. They still wouldn't cover the flood.  She still would need a separate policy. My insurance is like that. I have to pay it all once a year or pay extra for making payments. I don't want it in with the house payment. I don't trust them to make it on time. I have heard of people whose taxes were late because the mortgage people didn't make the payment on time.

Thanks so much for your suggestions! I plan to check out safeco if they have it here. Also plan to Look into Geico since I’ve already been getting car insurance with them. Probably going to be more expensive & will have to go through home inspection again but I’m not feeling it with this company & I’ve been with them since 20ll! I never hear from them unless payments are late! No perks, no messages, no nothing! I’m debating cuz having to go through home inspections again is such a pain & now according to the condition of my home & yard; I know I’d fail! Wish me luck I’m gonna really need it! Another storm just passed!😥

You'll probably get the best rate with Geico as you'll have a policy bundle with your car....

We went through AARP which has Hartford.  We've got the best coverage, including auto, at the best price we've had in years.  Great folks to deal with.

The best thing to do is to call 5-6 insurance companies, get out your old policy to make sure you are comparing apples and apples, and get quotes.  Also, you may find that if you have received a cancellation it may slightly affect your credit and thus your payment.  Ask the agents about this!  You may or may not find a variance on your home rate.  I have called around at times and not seen much difference.  However, recently something occurred that made me check around and my bundled home/auto is now a bit over $200 per year cheaper!!! Try the insurance agents who state that they have access to multiple insurers and can run your info to get the best price.

Flood insurance is entirely different matter.  I have no experience with it, but understand that in areas such as Florida, it is going to be pricey!

We have State Farm, been with them a long time but lately their prices seem to be rising for no reason; not like we filed any types of claims; so may start to look around to do some comparision.
