Net Neutrality
« on: July 01, 2018, 09:09:16 pm »
I'm trying to understand Net Neutrality. Are Internet providers trying to give us access to only websites we pay for? Or are they making us pay?

From my understanding, they can slow your access speed down on you at their will.
Have a wonderful day!

If net neutrality is removed, internet providers can create different speed lanes. Then put everyone on a slow speed and charge people more if they want a faster speed.

But doesn't this already happen? I can sign up for faster or slower connection speeds with my cable company/provider, depending on what I can afford/justify - just like I can select from different channel packages for the same reason.

I thought net neutrality was content based and not just how fast or slow your internet connection is - unless I misunderstand the above quoted text. (And I could also be way off base on my assumptions since I haven't really followed this in depth).

They always find a way to charge more.

I became a cord cutter a few years ago. I stream everything now except the local NBC station. I have a rooftop antenna I want to get put up to see if I can get more local channels. It's funny. Before cable and satellite, everyone had one of those tall metal antennas on their house. Then cable came and people removed them. Now, because of corporate greed, people are going back to the old ways lol

This pretty much explains it.  The internet providers can, at their whim, slow or speed things up as they wish.  This means they can control entertainment and information better.
So, another related question:  Does that mean that devices that stream, such as Roku, for example, can somehow be slowed by your internet company? I mean, I've never used Roku, but from what I understand it is a streaming device.  Or am I nutz????????

All this micro-control makes me weary.

Historically, we have been warned about this for many generations.  It is like the slowly cooking frog.  Happens in drips, and then you are defeated.

It seriously sucks.  They shouldn't be able to slow you down any time you want.  I pay for high speed...I want high speed.

More or less I already feel like they slowed down a bunch of sites already and already planning on packages to sale.

A lot of people getting worked up over nothing. I'm old enough to remember the internet before 2015 and the panic makes little sense to me.

Net  neutrality is just a terrible control tactic.

They're trying to make us pay more for less.
