Any substitute teachers out there? I recently started to substitute at my kids school to be more involved than just volunteering. Do you like it. Any advice?  ;)

My wife has been a substitute assistant (mostly with special needs kids) for 12 years and loves it. She is 75 and still working, but takes off any time she wants to.

Yes, and I love it! I am a retired educator and love the interaction with the students; hopefully the teachers who you sub for leave good lesson plans; just follow those and you should be ok; if you have any problems most schools have a grade level chairperson who can assist you. Have a good school year.

Congrats to all you subs. :star: That's gotta be a tough gig. Especially for special needs children. Kudos!  :highfive:

That is good . I give anyone  a lot of credit  for doing that as a part time job or even a full time job. We should have more teachers or subs in this day and age

When i was in school we had a kid whos real name was Marco  Polo   poor subs  would always be sending him to the office, and we all played along , pretty funny ! that was 50 years ago when most kids had normal names ,  not all the crazy names of today.

I taught when my young men were in school but I don't think I could deal with it now.  I don't want the stress of dealing with some of the disrespectful students and parents.  I volunteer and feed the homeless and get great satisfaction from that.

I did it when my kids where little and loved it.  That would be a good retirement, little extra money.

I could never be a teacher in any form. I remember the way kids treated teachers in school and some of them were freakin' crazy. Props to those strong enough to teach, but I am not unfortunately.

I substituted off and on when I was much younger.  The last time was probably about 15 years ago.  I liked it to a point.  There were good and bad days depending on several factors.  I would advise that you decide what grades you seem to like best and if there are particular subjects that you have more familiarity with than others.  Maybe you would do well working with special needs kids where there are parapros in the classroom. I decided I absolutely was unwilling to work in Junior High School or in decidedly "behavioral" classrooms.  See where you feel you have the best fit!
