For me it would depend of the cost of the item and how much time it would take to go back to the store to return the item.

Yes, return product if damaged, bad, or expired.

Yes I have had to return a few things, I try to be really careful when  I buy things though.  I hate getting home with fresh fruit in packages and when I open it I find mold or just plain rotten on the bottom where you can't see it, or bread that you could not see the mold until you opened it.  Our grocery store seems to try to sell items  even when  they are starting to turn bad. I refuse to buy the items and I don't mind telling the produce manage when an item sells bad.  I can  smell bad potatoes, rotten or almost  citrus fruit. Just as soon as I  go into the store and if he does not pull then I will take it up to customer service and   and give it too them. No I am not bashful about it.

Every cent counts so we will always take things back when they are not of the quality we had expected. We should not be expected to cover a store's bad merchandise. The store should not have bad merchandise on it's shelves to begin with. This is one of the reasons that I do not have fresh food delivered. You never know what you'll get and the people packing the order, often times, do not have a vested interest in your happiness. I do not think that grocery stores will ever succumb, completely, to the internet's takeover of retail. Even Amazon and it's discount offers at Whole foods is not enough enticement to order on line. Costco was out of a product I enjoyed with a cost of eight dollars. I looked for the product and the cheapes I could find was sixteen dollars. No deal on groceries.

I have checked the date carefully on cheese and got it home and opened it and found it moldy (where you couldn't see it the bag).  I have also gotten bags of apples and oranges with rotted ones in the middle,  I have given up buying these items unless they are loose and I can inspect each one.

Whether I return a product or not, the grocery store should be notified if something is bad.

Depends what it is and how much it cost, a couple dollars I can forget about. Several times I have opened up a package of chicken I bought only the day before, with the expiration date still days off, and found it already gone bad. Well as bad as I feel handing a double-bagged package of foul smelling raw chicken to some poor employee at the customer service desk, I want my money back.

The vast majority of the time, the fruit you buy at the store is disappointing, but I don't return that. Fruit's a gamble. The store doesn't have Xray fruit vision, it's not their fault that one melon was lousy.

I agree that is depends of the cost of the item if worth bringing back

Yes, it really depends, I never have even though occasionally a product is bad.

I can only think of a few times I have returned something. I had bought some cheese and the expiration date on it was a few months out but when I opened the package it was moldy. Another time was when an item was recalled.

In almost every case, we're taking items back.  The stores where we shop have very good customer service and are close to our home.

We rarely have to return anything but when we do, we're treated right.  The nice thing about where we live is that it's not a big city but it's also not a rural town.

There are plenty of stores and plenty of competition.  Store managers know this and I feel that they go above and beyond to make things right; at least for me.

I've returned items twice. Both times it was fish/seafood. Both times when opened, I got a strong smell of ammonia. That's not good. If the fish were cheap fish, I wouldn't bother but this was expensive.
