Cholesterol
« on: September 27, 2018, 04:58:28 pm »
I get a blood test once a year and have since I was thirty (in addition to two physicals per year). My cholesterol levels, if I don't mess around with them, are similar to both of my parents who are still very active at eighty plus years (and my grandparents before them who lived into their nineties). I say similar in the respect that the bad cholesterol level is about 30 mg/dls higher than what is considered desirable (200 mg/dls). Last year I fasted for two days prior to the test and was only 10 mg/dls higher than desired. One year I increased diet concentrations of kale, oranges, dark chocolate, garlic and red wine and was actually below the desirable total. My doctor wanted to start me on statins until I provided this same argument and pointed out that I was twenty pounds over weight so she backed off. Not too worried about my cholesterol.

Yes, I worry about my high levels of bad cholesterol.
I do not like statins. I personally think they are not safe.
Any other way to lower your bad cholesterol is diet...but
what works and does not work- I really do not know!  ???

Keeping Cholesterol levels normal can be tricky.  It does take work and diligence to get and keep the desired results.   :peace: :peace: :peace: :peace:

I do believe a lot of it is genetics.  My total cholesterol is a bit high but my hdl was over 100.  They tell me that is just genetics

I've been on statins for years but my hope is to stop taking it sometime soon.  I've just recently stopped my blood pressure medicine and do feel better.  After I'm sure I've been off the BP medicine long enough then I'll start the process of getting off the statin.  I used to never take meds and now find myself taking 7 at day.  At least it was 7 until about 2 weeks ago; down to 5 now.

I have high cholesterol a couple of years ago and since have been watching what I eat which has brought down my cholesterol to a more acceptable level. I could use to lose some more weight.

I have had high cholesterol levels for years and have gone off and on statins...mostly off.  I think I have familial hypercholesteremia. You can regulate your cholesterol levels without statins but have to follow a pretty strict diet and exercise.

On and off statins myself too.  They give me leg cramps.
