Are you offended when people get sick on your nationality's food?
« on: September 30, 2018, 12:20:34 pm »
I won't eat Chinese food from any source because it's made me so ill so many times in the past that I'm not willing to gamble anymore. Even the smells bring back bad memories that make my stomach nervous. My family however loves it, so we still occasionally go to a Chinese restaurant together, where I don't order anything (I usually tell the waiter I have a food allergy because it would feel so rude to admit the truth). Some people tell me that's racist, I say you can call me whatever you want if I can avoid a full body evacuation.

If you were a chef/waiter/home cook, would you be offended if somebody came to your meal and respectfully admitted that your nationality's food makes them ill?

Kudos to you for going with your family despite the fact that you can't enjoy the meal with them.  I would venture to say that there is an ingredient in the food that made you sick is the culprit as opposed to the food as a whole.  anyhow, don't let others dictate who you are.

It wouldn't be rude to tell them that eating certain foods from their establishment doesn't agree with you, it wouldn't be a racist thing either.

Why would anybody be offended because you won't eat a certain food or got sick eating it? Oh yeah. We live in the land of the snowflakes.

I could care less what somebody else likes or doesn't like to eat.  The only thing that makes me mad is like when a cousin of mine (who acts like she is 2 instead of an adult) wants to sit and argue if I say I don't like something or it isn't good.  And insult me and say "oh you don't know what is good" or "uh-huh" over and over like a baby.

Yes, I know what is good. It may not be the same as what somebody else likes but we are all different.

And NO it is not racist to not like Chinese food.  If you said I hate Chinese people because they are from China then that would be racist.  I don't eat Chinese food either.  If that offends a person from China then that is their problem.

Probably so.  There is a GOOD chance that ingredient is MSG. They sprinkle MSG on top of dishes to keep them looking fresh longer (like on buffet bars).  A lot of people are allergic to MSG.

It is really none of anyone's business if you go in with a group and you do not order anything. You do not have to give an explanation. Although if I were a wait staff person I would wonder why you would come in to a restaurant and not eat anything.  If you were with a group I would understand it more. But in the back of my mind I would wonder if you didn't have the money to pay for a meal. And that would make me feel bad.

Nationality does not necessarily equal a race.... ethnicity does.
For example, if you are American, that is your nationality - there is no American ethnicity & therefore it's not a race.
Mexican is also not a race, it's a nationality... not an ethnicity.

If you don't like a type of food, that is not racist, it just means you don't like a type of food.

People seem to want to be offended by anything so they virtue signal to make them selves righteous, all so tiresome.

No, it does not bother me in the slightest. Everyone has their own tolerances for certain types of food.

Nope not in the least and if you get sick from a place you stop going to that place simple as that . Not every place will make you sick when it comes to food it could be the cook could be messy or the food isnt kept or cooked right

But certain foods have specific spices or ingredients. And no matter who fixes it most likely it will have the same stuff so it will make the person sick no matter who cooks it unless they alter the recipe. Make a copy cat recipe and then it usually taste totally different.

Racist?  Everything is seen as Racist anymore if you don't accept cultures, lifestyles and others choices.  That's just nonsense if ya ask me.  I can't eat at Chili's.  My husband loves the food there.  I went with him once.  Knowing it makes me sick I ordered a salad.  We haven't gone back.
