Carbonated drinks causing anxiety?
« on: December 05, 2018, 10:14:04 am »
This is going to sound silly, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I've found that drinking carbonated beverages on an empty stomach seems to cause anxiety for me. The belching sensation that it often causes makes me feel nauseated, and in turn, causes anxiety. Could this really be the route of my anxiety???!! I'm drinking a non-carbonated lemonade right now and I feel really good. I'm 32 years old. Have I finally found out what triggers my anxiety??

I have never had this problem but it's good you trying to find the cause of your anxiety.  Try it on an empty stomach and then the next day try it around the same time on a full stomach and see what happens.  Hope you get to the bottom of your problem.

Thanks for your support! I'm aware it may be a somewhat "unique" issue so I'm curious to see if anyone else has experienced it.

I've never heard of anyone with that experience, but stranger things have happened. How long ago has it been since you stopped drinking them and how many 'unrelated' instances of anxiety have you had in that span? It may just be coincidence, but it's worth trying just to see. If nothing else, you may experience other health benefits from the beverage change.

Well, I have a fair amount of healthcare experience, both physical and psychologically, and I have never heard of this one. However, if this benefits you, you should definitely explore this and see if it continues to be right for you. You know what they say, "If you can see it, you can be it."

It's more likely the caffeine in the carbonated beverage that's causing anxiety. As a fellow sufferer, I've tried to cut out caffeine from my diet. I generally get only caffeine free soda/coffee as much as possible. It does make a difference.

I've stopped drinking them 6/7 weeks ago and I have only had one weekend of bad anxiety. I was even okay on Thanksgiving weekend, which I was expecting to be really nervous about, so I think there may be a strong correlation.

I've thought it was the caffeine in the past too, but I don't get nervous if I have a non-carbonated but caffeinated drink from Starbucks. It's only from a heavily carbonated drink like Coke.

I have never heard of this kind of a cause for anxiety but if you even suspect it causes yours, you should just make every effort to drink other kinds of drinks altogether and not even ever worry about it again. I recently tried to cut down on anxiety in my life myself too and found that all kinds of alerts I had on my iPhone were really ramping mine up a lot. I ditched all the notifications and now feel a lot better during the day. Just ditching some of these triggers in your day can make you a lot more comfortable.

Carbonation does not cause anxiety. But caffeine can.  Belching is not anxiety but carbonation can cause that and does in a lot of people.

Maybe "anxiety" is not the issue.  Caffeine can cause a lot of problems.

I believe you...but ingredients have a lot to do with the side effects.
Caffeine, too much sugar, dangerous colors/dyes and flavors and more.
Try "Blubby" sodas by Pepsi Co.
Eight different flavors. Visit Pepsi.com and see if this works for you.

It's more likely that the high fructose corn syrup in the soda is the cause, rather than the caffeine.
I drink a lot of coffee, and no anxiety.  But I used to drink lots of soda, and had anxiety and even panic attacks.

Yeah, but the belching causes anxiety in me (I told you .... I'm a special case ... lol). I've thought it over and don't think I drink enough caffeine for it to cause problems for me.
