Yes. Same with us. Lower that what we have from previous years.  We always do regular deductions just right one.

Our refund was smaller too. It's because they are taking less from your paycheck.

Like Tresbn00 said, you're supposed to set your deductions so you come out even at tax time. But I've always had the max taken out of my check, because I like getting the refund. It's nice to have a bunch to put away at once for vacation or whatever. It's like a little backup savings account (with no interest, of course) that I can only access once a year. Otherwise, it's just a little bit extra every paycheck that I'll probably just spend on stupid stuff.

We don't use the IRS as a savings account (no interest)  in order to get a refund. We always pay in a little so we aren't moving real fast on filing.

Everyone I have talked to say they are getting much less. I'm scared to see what my return is, if I get any at all.

We don't use the IRS as a savings account (no interest)  in order to get a refund. We always pay in a little so we aren't moving real fast on filing.

I had claimed 0 on the W2 and then claimed 1 when I filed my taxes until someone explained to me that basically I am just letting the government use my money for free all year.  That it is better to claim 1 and get a bigger pay check and then get a smaller refund.  That makes total sense to me.  But you cannot explain some things to some people.  They cannot grasp that.  They want that big refund check.  You can just as easily open a savings account and deposit $10 every paycheck in to that account and then draw it out in January.

In the end, what difference does it make? You're either getting a tiny bit at a time all year long or one lump sum at once. It's a matter of preference. I already have two savings accounts that I'm often depositing into and withdrawing from all year long for various emergencies. It's nice to have a bunch of "bonus" money (that I don't have to think about and can't access anyway) coming in every February that I can use for a winter getaway.

The difference is I am tired of hearing everybody whine and cry about how Trump took all their money. He didn't. They are foolish. That was the point in my post.  The tax cuts helped me.  It helped everyone else too they are just not smart enough to realize it.  They got the money all thru the year. I personally do not care how you or anyone else does their taxes.  Yes it is a matter of preference.  I am pretty sure when the tax cuts went in to place they were telling people they may need to adjust their with holding.  I just cannot believe how ignorant people are when it comes to filing taxes.  Or understanding how it works.  Even when you explain it to them they are like no that is fake and refuse to believe it.

If you want to pay more in and get a refund that is bigger then that is great. Like I said, I use to do that. Until I realized I was just giving the government an interest free loan.

My tax refund seemed to be lower, but I didn't have as much taxable income because I am retired and only pay taxes on my retirement check.  I worked for local government so I don't have to pay state taxes.  When I started receiving Social Security my retirement check was reduced.  I do think the refund I am getting is pretty good compared to the amount of taxes I paid in.

I always get back, last year we managed to get $2500 between both of them, this year I own the IRS $500 and state will give me back $25, it is absolutely ridiculous.  I knew that is was going to be less, the NEW TAX REFORM, was for benefiting the RICH and FAMOUS, not me the "Middle class".  But to own it is completely awful.  I have never in my life have had to pay anything to the government.  My very first tax filing it broke even, but the own!!  I own a house, pay Property taxes plus interest plus Mortgage Insurance, but that is all gone now.

IT IS AWFUL

How much did you get in your paycheck each payday over and above your usual amount from the year before?  We never got a refund from the IRS. We always had to pay in, no matter what we made. We were self-employed and although had a lot of business expenses, sometimes, 4-6 pages of expenses, we still never broke even. Always had to pay in, sometimes a few thousand $$. We had CPAs do our taxes every year, too.

So how much did you pay in? Sounds like you had less withheld during the year.
