Do you leave butter out to stay soft?
« on: February 21, 2019, 09:35:51 am »
Do you leave your butter out to stay soft?  I have always been afraid of doing so but now heard so many on facebook and friends and family that do so I am going to try it.  Can't be margarine only real butter but that is all we eat.

Yup, I leave it out.  My mom always did and still does.  Hasn't killed me yet.  LOL

No.  It can be left out for a while but does need to be refrigerated.  Our Walmart at Christmas time use to take pallets out of the cooler and put on the floor and leave for a few days then put back in the cooler what did not sell then leave it there until they put it in the cooler to sell.  I do not see how that was safe at all.  But they did not care what my thoughts on it were. lol

No... it all stays refrigerated unless it is set out for awhile at a dinner or event.

I refrigerate Peanut Butter, too & people say it's supposed to be left out, but to me it just sounds gross

Make sure the butter doesn’t spoil!

My daughter always leaves her butter out to stay soft so I do the same which, at one time, was against my better judgment. I claim that it is totally safe and much easier to spread.  :icon_rr:

The following info is taken from the website Kitchn: "Butter is, after all, made from cream, so there is logic in thinking that it, like cream, should also be stored in the fridge — but there’s a difference. The primary component of butter is fat (at least 80 percent). High fat combined with low water content make for a less-suitable environment for bacterial growth.

Factors leading to spoiled butter are exposure to air and light, so keep it in a covered butter dish or butter crock that will protect it from both air and light, and help to keep it at a steady temperature to stay cool enough to hold its shape.

The climate where you live is also an important factor, with cooler climate areas being more favorable to room-temperature storage. If the temps in your kitchen go much above 70°F, it’s best to leave butter in the fridge.

When left at room temperature, salted butter fares better than unsalted, as the salt content also makes it less prone to bacterial growth."

I only leave butter out if the recipe calls for the butter to be softened.  Other than that I leave butter in the refrigerator the rest of the time.

We always have one stick out at room temperature in my house. I prefer that it stays covered in its little container, but someone always forgets, so it's not only out but exposed a lot. Looks like I've survived so far :p

For years I always left a stick out in my butter dish and never ever had any problem but I now use a different kind and I keep it in fridge

I have never done that.  I don't know if it makes a difference or not. I know cookies always say "softened" but mine is fridge soft. lol
