Plastic
« on: April 02, 2019, 06:08:26 am »
Do you know that 48 pounds of plastic was recently found in the stomach of a dead whale?  If this isn't evidence that we need to recycle, recycle, recycle, and quit blindly throwing out our garbage anywhere and everywhere, i don't know what is! Clean up our world!!

I am 100% behind recycling, and would encourage anyone else to do it also. It also gets my blood boiling when I see people littering and some of the crap I see in the yards and streets as I walk around through different neighborhoods in my town. But I am also 100% turned off by the militant force feeding of many in the environmental movement and the absolute bullspit that that braindead freshman congresswoman from New York is trying to pass off as a "Green New Deal".

Treat the planet right and be kind to the wild animals that live on it because it and they were a gift from God and we are supposed to do what we can to keep it nice. But excess plastic garbage and cow farts and burning fossil fuels and driving cars are NOT going to destroy the world in 12,000 years (let alone 12 years). The only way to avoid the unfortunate situation described by the OP is to either: (1) stop the use plastic completely and totally by the entire planet, or (2) forcibly enforce 100% recycling by 100% of the global population. Neither of those alternatives is practicable or possible.  You will never get 100% compliance or 100% elimination - not even if Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is made supreme empress of the universe.

I recycle and believe it's important.  Our waters are filling up with trash.  I heard on the news where the ships dump large amounts of garbage out in the ocean.  They should be fined if caught.

I always recycle. I think the way bottles get into the water by people just carelessly throwing  bottles into the water. Even if they put the bottle in a trash can will still avoid plastic from being mixed in the ocean or lakes

We recycle everything possible in our household.  Plastics, aluminum, glass, paper, etc.  We have containers all over our backyard.
Have a wonderful day!

I recycle a lot and am willing to do more. I have noticed they are trying to ban a lot of plastic that restaurants use for takeout orders and straws. I remember when straws were paper.

I know - it is just so sad to see wild sea creatures ending up dead on shore and then when they get cut open, it is easy to see how they got sick what with all the plastic garbage in their tummies. We have got to start banning the use of plastic bags in stores and do a lot more than that too to solve the problem.

In addition to recycling, I have also stopped using one-use plastic water bottles.  I have also recently bought reusable grocery bags so that I don't need the plastic ones.  I now have to get into the habit of bringing them into the store every time I shop. I have recently donated to one of the large conservation non-profits.  I have also found an African based wildlife sanctuary for elephants, giraffes, and rhinos and will soon donate to the care of one.  All of these animals are in danger. I want to do what I can to keep this planet healthy.  Oh! I have also started buying biodegradable cleaners about 75 percent of the time!

I hated to hear that. I do recycle and wish more people would. I know most of my family members do.

Hubby and I recycle as much as  we can, but our  small town has no recycling plans.   We  rarely use a plastic bottle, prefer to use our own  drinking  glasses. Wash  and refill.  Most groceries  go in my shopping bags.  But here is still  stuff that has to go to the  dump and they are not very  careful how they  dump and plastic bags go every where.  Mostly grocery bags it looks awful out there. We  compost every thing we can also. then it all goes into the yard somewhere.

I agree with you about the advice! I felt sorry for the whale. That’s what people get for being lazy!

I finally quit using plastic bags at stores and bring my own reusable fabric bags.  We have a very comprehensive recycling plan in our town, for which I'm grateful.  Plastic never dies.

Unless it’s not recyclable. Plastic with a “1” (polyethylene terephthalate) or a “2” (high-density polyethylene) in a triangle would be considered recyclable.

I agree: Clean up the world!
I think we should create: "Garbage Day"...which by the way is every day.
Let us teach people how to responsibly dispose of all of their garbage.
Companies are learning the hard way "how bad consumerism can be" by
polluting our planet. Some companies have taken drastic measures by averting
catastrophic situations. We should all cooperate in our cleaning efforts.

What gripes me is garbage going on barges to be dumped in the ocean. in the Pacific Ocean, that large area of plastic crap floating is not just from our country but from all countries west of the west coast. So what do they do?  I bought grocery bags 10 years ago but now that I can't go to the store, they don't get used. Hubby goes to the store without telling me. I was almost out of the plastic grocery bags because of using my bags, but the plastic ones are building up again.  Recycling plants doesn't take them around here.

Another thing that gripes me. When the public recycling bins are full, people just drop their stuff outside the bins. They don't take the stuff home until the bins are emptied. When a stiff wind comes up, bye-bye clean areas. Half the towns are now taking the bins away because of it.
