I have felt safe using Uber in the past, but now that this girl got killed who got into a car thinking it was an Uber ride when it wasn't, I think you are right in suggesting we all ask for more info before we get into any car we think is an Uber or Lyft ride.

I think she was too drunk to ask for information.  If she had been sober she would have known she was getting in to the wrong car.

I keep my doors locked all the time.  I was sitting at a red light in the middle of town a few years ago.  Two men in the car in front of me.  The passenger jumps out at a red light and comes back and tried to get in the passenger side of my truck.  I am so thankful the door was locked.  If he had got in it would have most likely been the last act he done here on Earth.

Just curious, but how did they know what the dead girl was thinking when she got into that car?

I would assume because they knew she had just called for an Uber to pick her up.  She was waiting for the Uber driver and saw a car stopped and thought it was who she was waiting on.

I would never use a service like this.

The woman in SC was not abducted by a ride share service.  She was drunk and got in to a man's car that she in her drunken state thought was an Uber driver.  Lesson learned...don't get so drunk you don't know where you are or what you are doing.

If some drunk just got in my car they are likely to get shot on the spot.

She had ordered a ride share service and thought she was getting into the ride share car she had ordered.  The guy driving must have been very misleading right after she got in and then used his child safety locks to keep her in the car.

Maybe anyone who uses ride-share should first get a concealed carry permit?

I have used Uber a few times.

When I order one, it shows me a picture of the drivers face, tells me the make and model of their vehicle, and shows me their ratings/reviews (1-5 star scale). You can cancel if you do not like what you see.

Additionally, you can send them a message with instructions, like honk twice, or whatever.

Do not know how you'd get in the wrong car with all this info, unless extremely drunk, which may keep you from being able to order the Uber or walk out to it in the first place.

Just be smart, and you will be safe.

If broken into statistics, I am sure you are much more likely to be invovled in a car accident (when in a car at any time, driving or as a passenger), than to have an Uber driver violate you in some way.
Probably a lot less than 1% have serious issues. They do millions of rides and you only hear the rare case of something bad happening.
In example, a pizza delivery guy assaults someone. This does not mean it is unsafe to order pizza, as it is a rare outlier. All professions have bad people within them.

And I DO think it is a MUCH SAFER option to ride in one than to drive drunk!

The news sure does like to focus on the horrific bad things that happen in life, and it seems like that is the bulk of what they report on.

However, I would not be a driver for a ride share, as I do not want to deal with a bunch of drunk people, or have them throw up or spill something in my car. Also I do not think you get paid much and are burning gas and putting wear and tear and mileage on your vehicle.

I would not use this type of service unless I was with a group of people and I think it is sad that this girl was killed drunk or not.

Agreed  She was with a group of friends and got seperated, they are going to have to live with this forever, that they did not try to find her.  Another reason to stay with your group of friends.  Uber has all kinds of safety features to make sure you get the right driver and car, but sadly she did not use.  I feel badly for all involved in this situation, friends and family.
