Faraging
« on: July 15, 2019, 06:24:07 am »
The more I think that I am learning about gardening, the more I realize I should just be learning more about wild edibles.  It could save you money.  I am fascinated by the plants that resemble each other.  You really have to have a good eye to be able to tell the difference in these plants.  Since I don't get out to forage I have brought some of these plants to my gardens.  The safe ones like elderberries, asparagus, some mushrooms.  I am really trying to learn the greens like pigweed.  Does any one forage for some of their dinners?  I am so tired of the traditional food, and the lack of selection the stores around here carry.

When we lived in Colorado we did a lot of the wild edibles.  Our favorite was asparagus with freshly caught trout.

Just because a wild plant favors something you eat that it is safe.  I remember years ago a new neighbor told me I could make a pie out of some berry that was growing wild in my yard.  Encouraged me to make a pie and eat it.  I should have made a pie and gave it to her. lol

Yeah the berries were poisonous and she knew that.  Guess some people's hate is pretty strong.

I think the idea of foraging is fascinating.  My lack of mobility would prevent my participation except for the edible flowers I could actually grow them.  My deceased husband would have been great at foraging.  We just never thought of it.

I feel like with some education I could forage from plants without getting myself killed but mushrooms kind of freak me out, even the non toxic ones. Eating a fungus... I just don't trust them lol

Some of the wild mushrooms will kill you.  Most will.  Some even your dog can die from eating.  I have all kinds of them growing on my property. Some are colorful and pretty. Nothing I have ever seen before.  I would not pick them and eat them though.  I won't eat the ones from a can either. lol
