WOW I am spending a lot on groceries
« on: September 08, 2019, 12:39:25 pm »
Ok admittedly I buy what I want or want to eat.  It seems like I am spending a lot for food lately though considering I don't cook or eat much but frozen food which I guess is expensive.  I also eat sandwiches, cold cereal and the like but whew do you think it is because food costs are going up or because of what I buy?  Do you feel like you are spending more on food or that your cost are pretty consistent?

I know what you mean, debidoo! My husband and I have been more surprised than usual at our grocery bills lately. It seems that what used to cost $100-$125 just a couple of years ago now costs almost $200! Thankfully, our grocery bill goes down a lot during the college year while the boys are not here, but then of course we're paying outrageous dining bills so they can eat at school, LOL!  :peace:

So true.  My grocery bills are about $100.00 a week.  That seems outrageous considering we eat out twice a week.  I can't believe some of the prices, especially for fish.  I try to make fish at least twice a week to cut down on meat, but sometimes the cost is so high I just walk away.

Everybody is.  Like you said in a different thread the frozen meals are going up so high it is hard to afford them.  They use to be 90 cents and now are $1.36.  And people said paying Walmart employees $10 plus an hour would not effect prices....

We stopped buying beef, except ground beef and only on sale (last week $2.48/lb but still cost over $12, and pork chops on sale still cost over $6 for 6 of them) and we stopped buying a lot of fish because of the price. Even butter is now $4/lb. In last week's flyers, all meat (including deli), dairy, and fish went up by $1/lb. two weeks ago. Forget seafood. Salmon is $9/lb. now. Bacon is $5/lb. Even potatoes are now $3.50 for 5 lb. unless you hit them on sale, then they're $2.98. I notice coupons are only good for 3-4 weeks anymore, some only good for 2 weeks but the sales go on when the coupons run out.

I think the're trying to force us to become vegetarians! The only good deal are the TV dinners but they're so loaded with sodium, cholesterol, calories, and more, that I don't buy them very often.

The tariffs have not helped the pricing at all.   A lot of foods we used to get from Mexico, South and Central America have went up with them.  For 2 years now we have not let the migrant workers into the country who do a lot of the manual/lower paying jobs enter the country so many farmers and ranchers have just had to plow under or not plant crops at all because of no help.

We do better in the summer because of the garden.  And we go fishing and eat our catch.

Groceries are bad, but our gas prices are horrid. We're spending more on groceries but exceedingly more for gasoline.  :o

It's just me and my daughter, we only get what we're going to eat for a few weeks, then I'll go out and buy something else. But I try and not spend too much on foods and then having to throw them out. So we buy at least $65 in groceries every couple of weeks.

That is because all the stores have increased  prices on everything in their stores.  It is awful on how high the prices are now. You buy less because you have less money.

My grocery shopping habits have changed dramatically since last spring.  I started eating isagneix shakes.  2 shakes a day, snacks and one plate and fork meal a day.  My husband decided he has his own diet and will eat what he wants.  So I only cook 2 nights a week.  The 2 nights I'm off from my full time job.  I buy quick convenient garbage meals for my teen to heat up.  It's cheaper for her to eat the school lunch rather my buy the groceries for more added junk to fill a bag.

There are no tariffs imposed by the USA against Mexico ...  I live in Southern California & the cheapest place to buy produce is the Mexican markets like Superior Market.  Look at their weekly ad on the internet if you are in doubt., they are so cheap.

Here's the Presidents Tweet regarding not implementing the tariffs against Mexico.
Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

I am pleased to inform you that The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico. The Tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the U.S. on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended. Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to....

....stem the tide of Migration through Mexico, and to our Southern Border. This is being done to greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States. Details of the agreement will be released shortly by the State Department. Thank you!
