Cat food
« on: September 09, 2019, 07:16:57 am »
Ok yesterday our neighbor who loves our new puppy, he brought over some what he thought was puppy food. He said that he bought it for his dog but his dog didn't like it. He gave some to our puppy and she loved it so he said that we could have it. My BF noticed it was cat food and the neighbor said "no way" QUESTION, can puppy's eat cat food? it's a small bag but I don't know if we should chance it. I dont know how he missed seeing the cat on the front of the bag lol

Will it hurt them - no but a puppy really should only eat puppy food.  I have both dogs and cats and they eat the type of food their breeds, cats eat cat food and dogs eat dog food. If your puppy eats cat occasionally it’s ok but please don’t make a total diet of cat food for the dog

Nancy I would never give our puppy cat food but the neighbor brought over what he thought was dog food and our pup gobbled it up. Once this half pound bag is done our pup will eat only puppy food....thank you for your advice

I won't hurt them.  My Mammaw had a cat and a dog and they fed them both cat food.  Puppies do need puppy food though because it has extra nutrition esp for puppies. But eating the cat food will not harm your puppy.

Thank you so much !!

It will probably give puppy the screamin runs, if your going to go ahead and feed it anyways, mix little amounts with his/her puppy food. I wouldnt feed it tho

No it won't.  It won't hurt them.  It is the same ingredients.

I would never do this because dogs that overindulge on cat food are likely to suffer digestive upsets from the higher fat levels in the cat food. These can include diarrhea and vomiting . An occasional mouthful or two of cat food won’t harm your dog’s health, but over the long haul, a dog that eats only cat food will probably become overweight and will also miss out on some vital nutrients contained in dog food that cat food lacks.  Have question this with my vet because I have one dog that will eat anything in that is in a bowl on the floor and this was his advise.  So now I feed the cat in a different room and always pick up the bowl if it does not finish his meal.

My cat ate dog food once. We got a free sample in the mail and I decided to give it to my little guy and he loved it.

A dog can eat cat food, but a cat will eventually get sick if they eat just dog food -- in cat food they add in an essential amino acid that is destroyed in the manufacturing process. Since cats are true carnivores they need that amino acid.  Cat food has more fat in it than dog food... I had elderly dogs, Lhasas that decided that they preferred my cat's food over theirs, they lived to be 20 & 21 so I believe it helped them at the end of life.  I don't think I would give my puppy cat food on a regular basis though, they might get hooked on it & not want to go back to dog food.... but as an occasional treat, definitely would.

I don't think it will hurt him because they are both made about the same way.  I have had cats that ate dog food and dogs that ate cat food.

Cat food and dog food are NOT the same. Cat food is high in protein and fat, which is why dogs love to eat it (like pizza vs grilled chicken and veggies). It's okay for dogs and puppies to eat it occasionally, but definitely not long term. It can cause digestive upset and diarrhea, and too much fat can cause pancreatitis. Plus you don't want your puppy to become overweight - it's very hard on their growing bones.

If you don't want to throw it out, you could use the cat food as training treats and continue to feed puppy food for meals, so she still gets all the nutrients she needs. She may not want to go back to dog food once she's had cat food for every meal.

Thanks, personally I dont see much of a difference. I wouldn't do it all the time but seeing as our neighbor gave us this bag, we mix it with Sasha's dog food and she is in 7th Heaven :)

So long as your puppy gets dog food after the cat food is all eaten up, I don't think it would cause any harm to the dog.
