High blood pressure
« on: October 13, 2009, 08:29:08 pm »
I took my mother to the emergency room last night because she had been feeling awful the last few days. She thought it was sinus infection so she would take sinus meds. But her head was hurting so bad last night she called me at mid night to come get her and take her to the emergency room. She explained what was going on and while they were doing the usual temp taking and blood pressure...the blood pressure results starting going off. They took it again and it did the same thing. Then they switched arms and took it one more time and well the same thing again. Her blood pressure was 211/ 124. And for those who don't know what that means..all I can say is that an adults pressure is suppose to be 120/80.

This is the first time in 23 years I had to see my mother on the hospital bed. They said she was on the verge of a stroke. Luckily her cat scans came back and there is no bleeding in her brain. This was a wake up call for her and for me as well. I have pre hypertention and now we are taking precautions.

I wanted to share this with you because we had no idea she ever had a problem with high blood pressure. We thought the headaches and hot flashes were from menopause but come to find out it wasn't. Since she has been taking the blood pressure medicine she said she can already feel a difference in her body. I did some research and it says that 77 % of people don't even know or show signs of high blood pressure. SO PLEASE GO TO THE DOCTOR AND GET YOURSELF CHECKED BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.

Thanks for reading and leave me your comments.

i hope your mother gets a better control of her BP. good thing you took her when you did. her levels were really high.

just to clarify though, it isn't considered hypertensive until you have 140+ as the systolic(top number) and/or 90+ as the diastolic(bottom)...just bc some people may think it's hypertension when it's over 120/80.

have her watch what meds she uses for her sinuses too. a good number of them can raise your blood pressure for the time being. (i'm not sure if they told you this or not)

take care!

Thanks for sharing, I know that had to be scary.  I take blood pressure medicine and I never take it regularly and I know I should.  I am sure I will start paying more attention now.

I got diagnosed with HBP several years ago and I was prescribed Norvasc, my BP went from 150/95 to 130/85 approx. so the meds worked for me
