Using convertible device on FC
« on: November 28, 2019, 10:05:08 am »
I’m considering getting a convertible touchscreen chrome book, (laptop and tablet), and I’m wandering if I’d be able to continue using FC on that device. Has anyone had experience using FC with a convertible device? I know we need a pc or laptop for the PTC Thanks.

I think it's mostly based on screen size. There are a lot of sections on FC, like PTC, as well as surveys on other sites, that aren't designed for smaller screens on phones and tablets. If your screen size is similar to a laptop, I would imagine that it would work. But I don't have a convertible device, so don't hold me to that comment.

If it is a mobile device such as a phone or tablet then most of the site will not work.  It does not matter what size your screen is.  It is the device itself that matters.  If it is a tablet with a keypad then it is not going to work like a laptop.

I personally have no idea, but if and when you find out, please let us know! I bought a (cheaper) tablet once, I couldn't even get the darn thing to connect to the internet! So I gave it to my grand daughter, who had no trouble with that! Of course she lives in a much better suited area for connections, so I was just glad someone got some use out of it!

Screen size and device type go hand in hand. If the site is not built using adaptive or responsive web design, it will not work correctly on tablets and/or smartphones due to the smaller screen size. If you lay out a web page to look good on a screen that's 1200 pixels wide, that layout is going to be too small to see (or just a jumbled mess) on a screen that's only 600 pixels wide.

They can also use other methods, like JavaScript, to detect whether it's a mobile device or not and which browser is being used.

Some surveys even though they could be used to do a survey are strict and will make it where only a cell or a tablet can be used. Mostly it's done because the size of the survey is just to big for small phones to even handle.

I have a google chromebook and sometimes I run across a program that tells me that this survey cannot be completed on this device. I am planning on getting another windows laptop or desktop but not until late next year :peace:

This is probably a question for support but I know that support has been slow in answering. Since you are only considering the purchase, I suggest you open a support ticket now.

OldBuddy who is a geek might know the answer. I hope that he will jump in.

You said something about needing a PC or laptop to do the PTC. You actually need a desktop or laptop to do everything on FC.

Yes, just be sure about what device will work, by contacting FC support, or just try and see what will work.

I do web design.  I do not tell it anything.  I designed the site(s) I am webmaster for on my laptop.  I have looked at both on my phone as well.  On the phone the site looks the same it is just smaller.  To see it you need to zoom in on the area you are looking at. But to my knowledge everything works on both devices.  The only people who could not get it to work on their phone it was their error.  And once we talked it works for them now.

They can tell what kind of device you are logging in from.

That is not responsive web design. The website should be built to adapt to different devices. It should not look the same on a 24" monitor as it does on a 5" phone. It's irritating to have to zoom in on a phone or tablet, and in some cases, it doesn't work correctly.

Not my problem.  The sites are designed for a computer.  There is no way to make the sites look the same on a 5 inch phone as they do on a 18 inch lap top screen.  It is impossible.  You will have to zoom in or out.

They're not supposed to look the same. That's my point. A laptop screen is large and wide, and a phone screen is small and tall. The website should adapt to whatever device the person is using. Go to amazon.com on a laptop and then go to amazon.com on a phone. Same website, different layout.
