What fundamentally makes a person good?
« on: February 16, 2020, 07:14:38 am »
I've been thinking about this for a while I can seem to find some core basis for this question when I consider this claim that good people do nothing and that people that are otherwise considered good can perform the same bad acts that bad people do and still be good. So, for you, what really makes a person good in the end?

Nothing. There is no one who does good, not even one.  :sad1:

I believe what the Bible says about us rotten humans. We're all chuck-full of sin because we are born that way.  :angel11:

I know a lot of people will have a problem with the first thing you said but if there can exist a bad person by nature, then why can't the other half of this dichotomy exist for there to be a good person by nature? I guess...whatever that may mean.

Role Model—Paul

The apostle Paul is realistic about his feelings. He candidly admits: “When I wish to do what is right, what is bad is present with me.” Paul is a good person at heart. “I really delight in the law of God according to the man I am within,” he writes. What’s the problem then? Paul says: “I behold . . . another law warring against the law of my mind and leading me captive to sin’s law that is in my members.” Paul’s failings don’t make him happy. “Miserable man that I am!” he exclaims.—Romans 7:21-24.

^ Don't know how to interpret that but is it saying that only a troubled man concerns himself with what is right and that's about as good as you get?

Steven,i am not sure you are asking me,but i will answer anyway.

The apostle Paul was a good man and delighted in Gods word and wrote many of the bible books. He is saying because of inherited sin from A&E even when he trys to do good the bad <sin>is still present in him....hence he says,"its frustrating"

There is a difference between practicing willful sin in Gods eyes or falling short due to our imperfection from A&E.This is why the human race needed the ransom sacrifice of Jesus.Penalty of sin is death.

I believe that being kind to all others is the root of being a good person. Also, being kind to animals. :cat:

I keep thinking and, initially, I want to believe it just simply boils down to intentions but that's not fundamental or at least in the sense I mean.

But, maybe I can attribute the idea to those that have a docile nature, a genetically encoded flight response and a general unwillingness that leads to inaction.

Maybe @linderlizzie is right and there is no such thing a good person but I want to go further and say maybe there is no thing as a bad person either.

When one gives their life up for another, thats not a good person?

When Jesus said it would have been better if Judas wasnt born, thats not a bad person?

The Judas thing always concerns me.  The betrayal of Christ was part of the plan for His death and resurrection.  Did Judas have free will?  What if he chose not to take the path that was foretold?  I don't think he was a "bad person."  Seriously flawed, perhaps....as we all are.

God isnt a puppeteer. Also God can choose when and when not to know the future.

EX In the case of A&E why would God warn them of death if they disobeyed if he already knew?Free will.He chose NOT to know then.

Jesus chose Judas to be an apostle. When he did he didnt know he would betray him then.Later of course he did.

Plus he sinned against the holy spirit.NO forgivness for that.Thats why Jesus said it would have been better if he wasnt born.

For both those questions, otherwise considered but not absolutely.

I answerd both those questions based on what Jesus said.I agree and it will make our lives better.I guess you only agree with what 1/2 Jesus says.

Reminds me of some that say they wanna serve or obey God on how they want to,NOT what HE wants.

God didnt leave his creation in the dark.Yes religeon has claimed to teach h is word, but Jesus said, you will know them by their fruits as compared to a tree giving fine fruit and another producing rotten fruit.
