Receipts

Do you save your receipts after you buy something? If so, for how long?

I still have all of my receipts from May 2016 to now. I think I'm going to toss the older ones.

It depends on what the item is. If it's expensive and I might not like it; of course I'll keep the receipt.

It's not a bad plan to just keep all receipts for a while. You never know when you might need them and it's not that hard to just throw them in a basket for a couple of weeks or a month.

Did you say you've been keeping receipts from May 2016 to now? To me, that's serious overkill.

Usually I hold on to receipts for as long as in necessary in the event that I have to return an item.  Typically it's about 30 days depending on what I got.

Another reason I keep receipts is to reconcile my credit card statements if I use my cards.  Again, that is about 30 to 40 days.

I don't think I've kept a receipt for more than 4 years though.   :)

I collect receipts so I can upload pictures of them to survey app that pays me.

I trash receipts fairly quickly, after taking a picture of them for the cash back app I use. Of course, I save receipts for expensive items (large appliances, PCs, laptops, etc.) for a few years, basically until their warranty runs out. What I like is when a brick-and-mortar store offers to send you an email copy of the receipt. That way I can keep the receipt indefinitely, or at least while I still have the item.  :peace:

I only save receipts if the product I bought has a warranty.  I save the receipt as proof of purchase.  My other receipts I take a picture on my phone on Receipt Hog to earn points towards money.

I keep mine for a year. It helps me keep within a budget to make sure I'm not overspending. I compare the prices every time I go grocery shopping. Prices either shock me or make me happy to see they're lower or the same from month-to-month.  :D

If it’s for large items, yes, but small items only for a short time.  Most things I buy I use either a debit or credit card, if I need proof I can call the bank or look on line at my bank account.

I save them for big ticket items.  I throw them and junk mail in a bag and then toss them out after a few weeks.

Yes, from May 2016 whenever I moved! I was planning on tracking my money and establishing a budget but that never happened.  :-[ Then, I ended up just holding onto all of them.

I, too, think it is overkill (most are from grocery trips and small purchases) so I'll start trashing them!

Ahh! That was my initial idea, as well, but I stopped keeping up with it after a few weeks. I guess I could do it retroactively but I'm sure that will take a while. I like the idea so I might do this in the future. Thank you!    :)

True! I think I went overboard.😅
I have heard that it's good to save them for taxes, too.  :)

No, I generally get rid of; unless it is a very pricey item then I may hold on it for awhile for example like an appliance I tend to attach the receipt to the literature and/or warranty that came with it.
