Fitness and diet
« on: July 29, 2020, 11:06:45 pm »
I am trying to figure out the perfect routine to be in the best physical shape for the rest of my life.
I did CrossFit for a number of years. I got super strongly and put on some size, but the size limited my range of motion to a degree, and I was always either super sore or had ripped hands.
I recently did a season of endurance training I complete my first half marathon and half-ironman. This type of training left me physicallyly weak but a motor that could run all day. Speaking about I have never kept to a diet or regim. I eat everything and anytime I want.
As I look to build this mythical fitness routine, I know I will have to sacrifice something somewhere. I am just curious about what others are doing? Bodyweight, Olympic lifting, yoga, the broflex, etc...

I'm doing a very limited amount of yoga, swinging a club, drinking coffee and eating bread products.

Nowadays, everyone's appearance really matters because people judge by appearance. It is sad of course this fact but we have no choice, we must be in line with what is at the moment. Personally, I've been dealing with sports and healthy eating for 2 years now and I do all this with the help of a program - The Noom food list that helped me a lot from the beginning when I still didn't know how to do everything correctly. Has anyone tried such programs? How was your experience?

I was a high school football player (went to state three times) which involved a lot of power lifting. I moved on to triathalons with three invites/qualifications to the United States championships. Marathons came next (fourteen in all) with three Boston qualifiers. Ultra marathons came next with an eighty five mile finish being my best before breaking my foot on a training run. I put on some weight during six months in a cast. I had never dieted before so I was surprised at my belly growth. I picked up a book "body for Life" and got into the best shape of my life while working out less than an hour a day, six days a week; eating six meals per day six days a week and having one cheat day a week to eat anything and not work out. Lately I am maintaining by doing cardiovascular work outs three days and weights two days while maintaining a sensible diet.

I walk daily at the State Park during nice weather and Kayak. In inclement weather I go to the gym and do the elliptical and weight machines.  I try to avoid fats, but I eat a lot of carbs.  I try to maintain a certain level of fitness and health just because I feel better about myself.

I walk whenever possible, eat as healthily as I know how (most of the time), lift some weights at home, and try to keep calm and stress-free (by occasionally concentrating on my breath and saying calming words such as "I am calm" and "I am relaxed"). Don't laugh. That really brings my blood pressure down.

Most of all just keep moving. "If you stop moving, you start dying." I think that quote is attributable to John Lytton.

I have a lot of weight to lose, so I've been eating more sensibly (no nighttime snacking) and walking in place to music every day. I like the walking, because it's something I can do that doesn't stress my joints and back too much. But starting to move every day now is letting me know how out of shape I've become. I just want to get fit enough to be able to walk through a large park or outside space without getting horribly winded!   :peace:

Victor Lewis: I agree with you- Looks (appearance) matters!
First of all: "Love your body". No matter the shape or health problems.
Have a medical checkup to detect health problems areas and start at improving them.
Everyone needs these for good health: Proper diet, plenty of rest, reasonable daily
exercise, mental alertness and a good attitude to overcome any personal problems.

You could start by eating healthier and exercise more. Don't eat foods that are tasteless that will kill a diet in a heart beat. Please do not count calories that will eventually make you obsessed with it hate it and quite. That stuff also puts stress on you and could help you gain more weight. Do more things for yourself instead of having anythign pre made make it yourself. Instead of having someone get you anything do it yourself. Little things even if they don't seem to matter do matter just like earning pennys on here . It all builds up over time the more you do it

I try to walk 2 miles every morning that it isn't raining or snowing out. This has kept me healthy for quite a while. I also try not to eat desserts after dinner - those really pile on the calories. I don't lose any weight by avoiding desserts, but I don't gain any either, so that is a good thing overall.

I got into great shape for about 2 years in my mid-50s going to the gym 3 times per week and becoming motivated to eat a lot less of everything.  I didn't so much cut out certain types of food as I simply started eating a lot less of everything.  I ate 3-4 times each day!
Then, when my gym put its membership fees way up, I stopped going.  Weight slowly came back on with that decision and as I aged.  About 4 months prior to the pandemic, I went back to the gym and started working out with 2 different trainers twice per week and going once on my own.  I really started feeling the change in strength and endurance towards the end, and my feelings towards food was starting to change.  Then this virus came.  Now I am struggling.  I walk on my treadmill several days each week and maybe lift my free weights once each week.  I need to do more but my entertainment during the pandemic has started to become eating. Mentally, I am trying to change this but it is difficult.
