I'm probably one of the few that still uses Dial-up for internet access, but it's been working fine for me until the recently. So I'm exploring the advantages of Broadband (cable) and DSL (phone company).
Would like your comments about the success/problems you've had with your connection provider and any suggestions you might have as to which way I should go.
What I know so far: the cheapest prices I've see quotes are $19.95/mo for DSL (+taxes & fees) and @25.99 for Broadband (+taxes & Fees) for the lowest download speed. Much higher costs/mo for faster connections.
Since I'm getting dial-up for about $17/mo incl t&f, I'm not too thrilled about changing. But I know the connection speed will be significantly improved (by comparison) even at 1mbps.

I've had cable and DSL and haven't had any problems with either. To me there was no difference in connection speed with either.

i have dsl my self i have good luck with it .but if u can afford cabal broadband it is. a lot faster than dsl is my friend oldbuddy has broad band cable it is a lot faster than dsl.
-
I have dsl with my phone company with very few problems so far have had over 3 years use to have dial-up and dsl is much faster.if you download videos dsl works ok
-
Cable is way better. DSL is slower, though cable and dsl do keep increasing speeds to the point where there isnt much difference. My personal experience with DSL was horrible because I couldnt get it to work with a wireless home network.
-
Cable Broadband is getting faster and faster, Comcast (Cable) has a 100MB's Plan where i live and ATT (DSL) has a 18MB's plan
-
DSL is typically slower. I use cable broadband...the only thing I loathe is that I have to pay for cable tv that I don't want in order to have the broadband internet access...

I have had cable from Comcast and up until yesterday, only had Internet and not TV or Phone. I added the TV yesterday because they gave us a deal for a year with NO contract, so we can switch at any time. I have also had dial up and DSL and there is no comparison, cable is much faster and more reliable. Since I make money online, the $50 bill is no problem.

Thanks for the input.
I have cable from Comcast so I'll start with them and see what I can get. Have Verizon for my phone company. Might try them both and see which one can get the stuff install first.
Glad to hear, tho, that there were few problems and things are working well.

I HAVE BEEN ALWAYS HAD COMCAST SERVICE, WHICH I WAS HAPPY... BUT THEN SINCE I MOVED TO SC I GOT TIME WARNER CABLE AND INTERNET... I DON'T REALLY LIKE THE CABLE SO MUCH. IT'S DIFFERENT AND THEY SOLD ME 300 CHANNELS WHICH I CAN ONLY SEE MAYBE 100 BECAUSE THE OTHERS ARE THE SAME ONLY IN HD. :bs: LIKE YOU SEE I'M NO REALLY HAPPY WITH THIS COMPANY

I switched from dial up to cable a number of years ago and found that the cable has been very reliable, quick and from what I hear less expensive than DSL. I also have been told that DSL is not as fast as cable. I also understand that DSL may not be available in all areas and may be slower further from the source. I have not heard the same for cable service.

I would just like to let you know that you can get a much cheaper price for Dial up threw LocalNet, I used to use them for my internet until just recently when I switched to DSL.
Their Dial up costs $9.95 per month at 56kbs, and you can also purchase the Web Accelerator for $3.00 extra each month, with the Web Accelerator my average download speed was 230kps. So my total bill each month was only $13.95 per month.

I just recently got rid of dial up and I AM SO GLAD. Dial up was driving me crazy. I ended up getting a modem card through my cell phone company and I love it. I have internet everywhere I go, as long as I take my laptop. It is great.
-
I'd recommend broadband...any way to improve connection is a plus...and if there's a way to have phone/internet/tv on one plan/service, go for it, makes it easier...I've had Charter for years, and its worked out well...

i have satelite broadband , and i hate it because you are under a fair access policy, but where i live it is either satelite or dial up, and dial up is the worst.
-
My mother has the cable/phone/internet combo service from Comcast. There were two or three times I've experienced it doing down and had to wait a few minutes for it to return.

Assume you still have to use the phone company for the dial up connection -- that's what been giving me the fits this last month. Probably do to the wet weather and internal phone lines.
But thanks for the LocalNet info. I'll check them out too. Even at half your speed, I'd be better off than where I was.

What's a fair access policy?
Do you have LocalNet in your area? (for dial-up)

Well, DSL is considered broadband, so, since you have never had it, you either have had cable or WiFi, previously. Depending on who provides your service.
A quick way to tell is, do you have a satellite dish, and does your service route through it? If so, that's WiFi service, if your local cable provider is the one who came out and set it up, then chances are you have cable, although I have experienced once a cable company coming out to set up my dsl, which is usually provided through your telephone service.
Hope this is informative and helpful. :)

i use dial up and its way faster than any thing that you guys could dream of
get like me :icon_rr:

Broadband is where it's at! :)
With every connection slow or fast, there will always be downtime, no matter where in the world you are.
It's whatever you feel like spending. How much do you wanna do online? Do you wanna finish the offers faster, not sit and load each forum page for 30 seconds at a time, etc?

Who is your dial up provider, please?? Do you use any kind of speed bosting program??
-
I think this is a no brainer. Of course broadband is the best choice if you can get it. I have been using broadband for about 5 years now and would never dream of going back to dial up. Once you go to broadband you will never want to go back.
-
I was stuck with dial up for years because we lived in the boonies. I live in town now and have Broadband through my cable company. I could never go back to dial up now. Broadband is definitely worth the money. Uploading a picture used to take like 15 min and now it's about 3 seconds. When I go to a page or click a link it's immediate, no loading. Videos won't say buffering before they play and they won't stutter or stop to catch up.
In my opinion you just don't get the best of the internet with dial up.
If you have cable, they will probably make you a deal and "bundle " it together to make it cheaper. I have High Speed Internet, Digital Cable, DVR, and Phone for about $80 per month
-
Well, I made my first try at high speed. Signed up for Verizon Wireless for their $40/mo plan. (Primarily because I could use it on all 3 of my computers.)
Big mistake -- turns out it has a 250mg monthly limit on downloads -- and I used that up in one day. Found out what 250 megabytes meant, tho. I cancelled the contract on day 2 and only had to pay for usage ($55+)
Liked the service -- but the cost is prohibitive for people who surf the net with PTC/GPT ala Fusioncash. Believe the cable service also has a monthly limit, but it might be more reasonable. Still checking. Live and learn.

I finally made the jump to Broadband (comcast economic version) and agree it is way better than the dial-up that I was using in terms of speed and reliability.
Currently have my laptop connected and I am slowly learning about the differences between Windows 7 and XP. Biggest issue for me is that I don't have Outlook Express available and am trying to figure out Windows Live Email. That will be a subject of another thread.
Thanks for you input.

broadband is faster but cost too much where I live so I go with dsl with my phone company.

By having DSL you have broadband. DSL is a broadband connection that uses phone lines as the medium. ;)

I switched from broadband to DSL. I am so unhappy with the service. Unfortunately, I went through verizon and there is a contract I must get through. It was supposed to be for a year but when i moved they extended it another year. If I had no moved the service with me they were going to charge 175.00 to cancel the contract. The service is sporadic. Although they promised btwn 1.5 and 3.mbs I rarely have over 1mbs and the upload speeds are at .6. I call all the time for technical help to get back online. I am so sorry I left Broadband. I too was looking for a way to cut expenses. I will never use Verizon again, once I get through the contract.
-
I have comcast and they probably have a sign up special monthly fee. After that expires, you can call them and try for an extension. Sometimes it works. Occasionally I get disconnected from either my internet or my t.v. cable, but know how to get it back. I have never had dial-up, but know I would not like it. For one thing, I am on my computer too much.

I work from home and must have the fastest ISP possible, so I've used cable for years.
