Obviously, shoplifting is a crime and immediately considered "bad" in terms of legality. But, I want to know your moral stance.
A good friend of mine has a motto set in stone that he will never steal something that has a price attached to it. An example: He won't steal a salt shaker in a store. He will steal a salt shaker in a restaurant. He justifies that if it doesn't have a price, it will not rob the company of earning or push their earnings back.
My look on shoplifting has recently changed. I always felt it was terrible, mostly because my father is a police officer and gave me the whole "good" vs "bad" growing up. Recently I worked as a salesperson in a mall and my five months there were the worst I ever experienced in a job. Complete unprofessional management treating employees like objects and not people. While working there I noticed how common theft was. In fact, it was unbelievably easy. Still I didn't want ANY trouble with the law. Eventually I walked out on the job and come the summer I decided to get a swim suit. I absolutely hate that store and its employees, so I decided to do myself a favor. So I walked out with a $19.99 item and I won't lie, it felt good. This is not something I plan to turn into a habit (it's the worst legal offense I've ever made in my entire life), and I would never do this to a local or mom-n-pop store. I justified my action that this is a huge retailer, loses hundreds of dollars every day, and they won't even miss what I took. To put it into perspective... don't we cheer on Robin Hood. He took from the rich and gave to the poor. I'm poor. ;)

It's illegal and no matter what you say, stealing is stealing. And the thing about your friend stealing stuff that doesn't have a price on it, if people kept stealing shakers/silverware or whatever, eventually they would have to purchase more to make up for their losses. I have stolen before (not out of a retail store, more like from a candy machine) but I'm just curious as to what part of shoplifting do you think might actually consider being good?
-
Uh, yeah, that would be bad, your concious should at least tell you that is stealing and it is not right. It doesn't matter how much money they have, God knows what you are taking.

Your friend is very wrong. Whenever ANYTHING is taken from a store, it requires the store to purchase the item again. I'm not sure if you've ever taken any courses in business, but it should be pretty obvious how to determine the profit for a basic sales system: Profit = Revenue - Costs (Pay checks, inventory, electric bills, and so on). Unfortunately, the store must replace the stolen item. This makes costs for the store go up, which means if revenue doesn't go up, the store loses profit. The easiest way to increase revenue is to increase prices.
I justified my action that this is a huge retailer, loses hundreds of dollars every day, and they won't even miss what I took.
Sure, the retailer itself won't really miss your stolen item. They'll just have to jack up the prices FOR EVERYONE ELSE in order to cover your own stupid idea. However, you fail to realize that stealing from a store location affects the job status of the employees who work there. If enough items are stolen, job cuts are made at the store level. This is a terrible thing, since retail store employees probably make less money than you do, and they are the one forced to lose their jobs over this action on your part.
To put it bluntly, you're so naive in your own little understanding of how it works that you never actually considered the large-scale repercussions of your actions.

Shoplifting is bad no matter how you try to justify it.
-
It is wrong stealing is stealing no matter where you take it from. It also is bad because people have to raise there prices because of people stealing from them. shoplifting is a crime.
-
I think you already answered your question in your first sentence. When things are STOLEN from stores with or without a price tag, it makes the costs go up for the store and that means that everyone has to pay extra to make up for other peoples criminal activity. Stealing is stealing no matter how you justify who, how, where, when, why etc.

What's done is done, you looking back after doing it is your conscience talking. In all retrospect you don’t feel right doing it. The thing is if you want to right your wrong you go back and return the bathing suit but with a :angel12: with a company that you said wasn’t worth its weight in gold. If not just throw it away and learn from this experience. People do thing out of desperation, you can't take someone’s advice if they don’t know what you’re going through. You know the saying "walk a mile in my shoes" I've done things in my time... making me a stronger person. Eventually it will get better, just keep positive. These are just bumps in the road to have you contemplate your life, just don’t drown on the little things.

Thank you so much for stealing! Seriously, I love paying higher prices to enable you and your friend's noble actions against establishments. We need more dishonest, self-centered, spoiled people like you in this world.
What are you going to justify next?
If anyone ever steals anything out of your car or breaks into your home, keep in mind you deserved it as far as they were concerned. Maybe they'll take some things you actually paid for, but you have more/enough 'stuff', so it's okay, right?
-
Shoplifting is wrong no matter what or where you take it from. If it's not yours don't take it.
-
I'd have to agree with the other posters saying that it is wrong and does cost the establishment losses.
-
I was the assistant manager of a store for over a year and catching shoplifters was a highlight of our day...but 9 times outta 10 they were teens and I let them off with a warning to never come back in....as for stealing myself- it was very tempting...who would know? It was just me somedays..However, the store's policy on items that were outdated (tees,posters,shotglassses-not food) was to trash them and throw them out, so if an occasional shot glass came home with me.... :angel12:
-
Wow.. Using your friends justification, he/she can even steal from your home. If it was my friend, I'd punch him and talk some sense into him.
-
no matter what the situation is stealing is bad, in some way or another that material object was worked for. So you are still taking out of someones pocket. Weather it is a salt or pepper shaker or not. Someone had to make for it to be there, which there are getting paid to do, and that person paying them for the item is the one geting stolen from. Hhmmm easy decision , if u take something and it is not paid for it is stealing. It shouldnt matter how much money you do or do not have. If u want something that bad or think you need it. Then work for it . Simple.
-
The answer to this question is a no brainer, it's WRONG no matter how you look at it. Stealing is stealing no matter if it's from a big chain store, a Mom and Pop store or a resturant. The bottom line is when people shoplift items from a store, everyone else pays the price in the end.
-
All I can say is wow..... it's ignorant people like you who are the reason thing's cost so much. Anyone who has a brain knows it is WRONG to steal, no matter what it is. My only hope is you oneday getting caught and being taught a much needed lesson.
-
go ahead and shoplift but bad karma will catch up to u eventually
-
Of course you have to know that it is BAD, because it is not a good thing at all. It is WRONG!!!
-
Wow....some people should really read what they write before they post it. Stupid post! :BangHead:
-
Okay now, some of the people posting to this are acting all high and mighty like they have NEVER done anything wrong. I've done it before. It's dumb yeah, but you do get that OMG I got something for free feel. It's a good feeling and it can get addictive. So, I definitely say even though they treated you wrong don't make a habit out of this. If you think they treated you wrong when you worked there, imagine how wrong they're going to treat you if you get caught.
I'm not going to tell you if it's wrong or right. It is against the law yes, but not everyone follows every law. It would be great if they did, then we wouldn't need cops. It's really up to you to follow it or not. I don't follow each and every one so I can't crucify you for shoplifting. (I've gone 70 mph in a 65 mph zone. I know, I'm a total bad *bleep*.) Although, if you get caught you pretty much lose all rights. You can decide to break the law or not, but you can't decide what happens to you after you get caught. But if you do get caught. DENY EVERYTHING! If they say they have you on video, ask to see the video. After you watch the video, DENY IT! If they say your friend said you did it. Tell them they're goddamn liars and DENY IT! If they say they have your DNA, say there must have been a mistake at the crime lab and DENY IT!
One last tidbit of advice before this post goes on too long. (May already be too late, I'm going to deny it if you say it is anyway.) If you're doing this because you don't like the way the store treated you, consider the bathing suit a parting gift. You got away with it. (YAY! Lol.) Now you can let it go. If that isn't enough here's this. I looked up the profit loss stores suffer from shoplifting. It's about 13 billion a year. Depending on what store you were working at, I'm sure they're getting their fair share of customers with "sticky fingers." So you don't have to put yourself at risk of getting caught when there are already so many people out there taking care of it for you. Granted you don't get the free item, but you can have the satisfaction of knowing that someone is taking something from that store. You're just not going to be the one going to jail for it.

Shoplifting is bad.
-
I stole twice from stores when I was a kid. Just a small slimjim one time and a pack of baseball cards another time. I felt really horrible both times afterwards. Never done it since.
Stealing is bad...don't even try to justify it.
-
Bad duh. thats what makes the t-shirts that cost 10 cents to make 40 dollars for the rest of us !

Man, I guess everyone hates stealing! :angry7: Funny story, I was at a huge super center and there was a couple walking by. The guy was carrying a bag of bananas and the girl was eating one. Then the guy turned to her and started going off about how she can't do that and how are they going to pay for it if she eats it. She looked really embarrased. OK, you had to be there for it to be funny but, I know I HAVE to give my 2 year old son the grapes in the supermarket or he will go crazy. I guess in a way everyone who has eaten a grape OR BANANA has shoplifted. Not so bad!!!

The country would run much smoother if everyone was a law abiding citizen.

STEALING IS BAD!!!!! Here in Indiana, a few years ago, a man shoplifted bread and bologna, was chased by the police and shot. He was holding up his cell phone and they said they thought it was a weapon. He never intended to hurt anyone, I guess he was just hungry. I would not want to be hurt over shoplifting, so I'm not going to do it.................. :crybaby2:
-
Shop lifting is definitely (bad) I never had any desire to take somthing that I didnt pay for or that I did not belong to me its just not in my realm of thinking.
I dont have a record and I want to keep it that way, I never want to know what its like to go to the slammer one items or even 1,000 of items are not worth the wrath of the law. :peace:
-
no matter how you want to turn it shoplifting is bad :P
-

Then cops would lose their jobs and they'd be the ones stealing things at retail stores!
Shoplifting is bad, but props to Gogokokigo for showing people that they shouldn't walk around like their crap does not stink. I worked at Target a number of years back and saw my fair share of shoplifting. Even some of the coworkers would do it (sometimes binding together) and would just look the other way. But when they saw a customer do it, they'd rat them out and call security. I admittedly stole some AA batteries and another time stole some fruit-roll ups (I was hungry so I dropped them, called them 'damaged goods' and took them in back and ate them secretly! OMG! I'm a terrible person and should be in prison for 10 years!).
When looking at it in black and white, it's pretty easy to say what's right and wrong. But I'll never forget the story about my recently-deceased grandpa living through the Great Depression. He was the oldest of 5 siblings. His mother had died and his father took off. He was living in a poorly-run boarding house and was constantly hungry. He would steal loafs of bread at a bakery once in a while to feed himself and his bros. Isn't that just SATANIC AND HORRIBLE!? Most of us would think no, not really, considering the situation. He needed to survive and care for his family. If he or his family died off from malnutrition, I may not be here typing this (time paradox) to see the gray-area side of the issue. My grandpa grew up to be a firefighter and later in life became a judge. What a weird twist of fate, eh?
The thing is is we've all done it in our lives. If not in a retail store, then somewhere else. Whether it be recently or as a kid. I would say the Original Poster has some logic problems he needs to figure out though (aka saltshaker in restaurant is still as bad as stealing a shirt at a retailer). You aren't poor if you typed this post on your own PC too.
-
Regardless if your father is a police officer or not stealing is stealing and stealing is wrong. I do not know what your friend has done to you but he has you second guessing yourself. Think about it what is someone took something from you. It does not have a price tag on it. So does that make the crime right?
-
:sad1: I never did try it, I'm not good, but just a coward!! hahahahaha

The answer to this question is a no brainer, it's WRONG no matter how you look at it. Stealing is stealing no matter if it's from a big chain store, a Mom and Pop store or a resturant. The bottom line is when people shoplift items from a store, everyone else pays the price in the end.
Very true, this is why they raise prices as well sometimes :'(
-
Anyway you put it its still bad....If its not yours then don't take it!

I couldn't agree more! :bunny:
-
It is wrong wrong everyone pays for it in the long run.... I however was busted shop lifting baby food 22 years ago got fined 500 and 200 hour comunity service... I didnt shoplift cause i wanted to and clearly stunk at it, my first time was my last.... it was wrong but we didnt have 2 pennyies to rub together.........
-
I think that it's wrong no matter how you look at it. I own my own business so maybe I understand a little more than others.....but the "salt shaker" was paid for by someone so therefore you are stealing someone else's things. Which is wrong!
-
of course its bad stealing what so everb is plainly bad

That salt shaker is an asset to the restaurant; it does have value for the company. Your friend is a moron...and a thief.
-
I think stealing is wrong but I also have a double standand.....Don't we all.
If the cashier neglects to change me for an item, I do not speak up (most times.....sometimes the guilt get's me).
If I am undercharged, I do not speak up but if I am overcharged, you can't get me to shut up.
So, in reality, I realize that my double standards is probably no better than shoplifting.

You say u are poor, (poor people have access to computers? unless u r at a library or any public place where hobos are accepted) NO OFFENSE - but you should never take what is not yours or a gift. Wether it has a price or not if it does not belong to you never take it. Your feeling to your old job - is not the way to take vengance. :angry7: Bad you stole, that is a sin.
