Title: Using sick days at work
Post by: g0ku4life on June 24, 2010, 10:47:09 am
So I am quitting my job since I got a different one, and we do not receive any compensation for any unused sick days. They are just there if we need them.

Do you all agree with taking sick days when you aren't sick just so you can use them? I know I'm using my last ones before I give my notice...that's for sure.

I've never understood why some companies have this policy... especially ones which allow you to bank them from year to year and not force you to use them before the year is up, or face losing them.  If you are an employee who is dedicated to their job, works hard, doesn't come to work sick, and is reliable, why should you be punished for not using sick days when you either retire or leave the job?  If you've been fortunate enough to stay healthy and use little sick days, upon reaching retirement or leaving your job, they should just pay you for the amount of days in your bank.  Some companies are good and do this, but many don't.  I guess it's more beneficial to them for people to just feign sickness so they can use them up before they give their notice.

Employee: I'm going to be retiring in a month and have banked 38 sick days.  I was wondering what will happen to them.

Boss:  I guess you should have been sick more...

I knew I was moving up in the world when I got a job that had paid sick days...... I don't think I was ever sick when I used it...just used them to beef up my check if I was under 40 hours or had to take time off for....other things

I DONT GET SICK OR HAVE A JOB SO I WOULDNT KNOW ABOUT YOUR SITUATION. BUT YEAH I WOULD DO STUPID STUFF SO THAT THE MANAGER CAN FIRE ME. (IF YOU GET FIRED THEY HAVE TO GET YOU YOUR PAY CHECK, BUT IF YOU QUIT THEY WONT GIVE YOU YOUR CHECK) SO THINK ABOUT IT

You better make darn sure that they will not require any proof, like say from a doctor.

For anyone who has the bright idea of using sick days when they are not really sick, can you say theft?

We don't have compensation for unused sick time either but the premise behind it is to have them in case of a major illness.  It's like a little extra money in the bank if you fall and break an ankle.  It is really a great program if you end up needing it.  If you don't, well, then move on and enjoy your healthy life.
