Title: Rude?
Post by: BK_Adores_Chase on July 02, 2010, 08:34:01 am
Say I'm an advisor, and a student is meeting with me for something.  If he or she keeps interrupting me, is it rude for me to say "Let me finish"?

They came to talk to you, but they won't let you talk. I don't think it would be rude to tell them to let you finish, or you could say "hold on".

when i was in management, and an employee would come to me with a question but would then repeatedly interrupt me i would say "didn't you come in here to ask me something?" and they would usually say "yes" so i would say "then wouldn't it be a good idea to listen to the answer?" that would usually shut them up long enough for me to answer them. now, sometimes they would continue to interrupt or would interject what i was saying with what they wanted to hear so i would just tell them "you obviously do not want to hear what i have to say." this would almost always shock them to the point where i could finish what i was saying and then kick them out of my office :)

No its not rude at all.  Its really very polite and they should shut up themselves and listen to what you are saying.  So when they see you if its something different then let them tell what prob is the tell them to listen and if they interupt you then tell them to be quiet for a moment and you will help them with the problem but they have to listen and let you finish then if they have something else to say then you will go from there.

But rude people usually never realize that they are impolite because that is their normal behavior until they learn a lesson someday. I always believe that you are treated the way you treat others so keep being polite is always good policy!

Ha. Rude? Please. I think it'd be perfectly acceptable to rip her head off. A little thing called respect, please?  Saying "Let me finish" is very polite, and to think thats rude would be...strange...lol

No it would not be rude but you could maybe say something like "would you mind holding your questions until after i am through speaking" or "I will answer any and all questions that you may have after our discussion".... ;)

He is probably has a ton of questions to ask you because you are an advisor.

It's not rude if you say "let me finish first" politely first. I know many people cut others off in mid-sentence. It's because they are too busy to get THEIR ideas cross, but not listen to you.

Nope, not rude. I'll admit I can be a rude person at times so if someone interrupts when when I'm telling them something I make it a point to interrupt them back. Gives them a taste of their own medicine and I usually covey my annoyance in my tone of voice so it usually gets the person to shut up. Not a very friendly approach so I wouldn't recommend it, but it's just what I do by nature. Either that or say "excuse me can you let me speak".

Not at all.  In fact,  you might want to start of by saying, "Excuse me for talking while your interrupting."  Hopefully, they'll get the point.
