Title: Have you seen the show "extreme couponing"?
Post by: sommap on January 21, 2011, 09:58:22 am
I hear they may make a series out of it.

The first show was ridiculous.  One woman had rooms devoted in her house for her stockpiling.  Our man had enough toilet paper to last for 40 years.  These people even go out and buy coupons so they can get more stuff.

I am a coupon clipper and do have a stockpile, but don't even have shelves arranged for all of my loot.  My stockpile consists of about four grocery bags full of stuff.

never seen the show, I use to clip coupons but now i just have them added onto my safeway card so much easier that way...  I do use the ones that come with products and some of the ones that are mailed to me cause they are normally bigger savings

Coupons work great it you are already planning on buying the stuff that the coupon is for.  There are a lot of people that cut the coupons becasue it says $2.00 off, and when they buy the item, they will never use it and then throw it away.

Heard of it but never saw it. Last year I found a coupon for one free pack of skittles. Printed about 70 sheets, got over 200 packs of free skittles. Still got about 150 left in a box. Now that is EXTREME!!!

I saw the show and was completely amazed at the extremes some people go through to save money. I most definitely would not have the time to do what the extreme couponers do. I use coupons for things I need when I get them, but don't get the sunday newspaper for the sake of coupons, or dumpster dive for them either. That to me is going over the top. I commend the folks that go through extremes to stockpile and save money on their grocery bills.

I watched the show and do follow the krazy coupon lady's site but some of those people are too extream.  Why would you need 200 free candy bars (when you are already over weight).  I like to get free items but I don't need 200 of anything.....well, maybe 200 in cash.

I can understand newspaper coupon clipping, but dumpster diving just makes a person look inane, it makes them look insane too, but inane for sure.

I have not seen this show.  I am sure this would be an intense show to watch.  The only problems with Coupons is that you have a hard time buying healthy food.

I haven't seen this one yet.  I am a coupon user and I use alot of  them but I don't go to extremes to get them or use them.  I usually have a coupon for just about everything I buy I sometimes have about $20-$30 in coupons b/c when I got grocery shopping I shop by the month or longer.  I print alot of my coupons off couponmom site.  I guess I save more money due to checking out the ads for walgreens and walmart.  Some times walgreens have better buys than walmart on certain items each week.

I missed the special, but the new series premieres this on Wednesday

I am so excited! Some of these people are nuts, but I'm still hoping I'll learn something when watching it.

I've always found that buying store brands was cheaper than using coupons, but I'd like to keep an eye on the show to see if I can learn something new.

I've never seen the show.  I use coupons every chance I get and will stockpile non-perishable items but only for what I can comfortably store.

Did anyone watch it last night?

I'm trying to figure it out, but I'm wondering if it's really location-specific. For example, where I live, it's my understanding that the Kroger in Memphis will only allow you to double coupons under $0.60, and you can't combine both card-coupons and paper coupons.

I'm going to give it a try with getting a binder, saving coupons and then matching store specials to my saved coupons, but I'm wondering if you have to live in a specific area to get some of those crazy savings like I saw on the TV show.

I thought they only double to 55cents here in middle tn.  I do use coupons and have saved as much as 40 buck and that the best i have every done.  The  grocercy store here will not take coupons printed from home.

I am a coupon clipper, but I wouldn't say an EXTREME one. I do however, print off coupons every week off my printer. I go to various websites looking for coupons after I have written my shopping list, looking for that one last deal on things. I usually go to stores that will allow me to double my coupons while there is also a sale going on.....I save big that way. One time I saved $23.00 off my groceries list with coupons. I also do loyalty programs and I will get a $9.00 off groceries no matter what the amount for being one of the store's Top Customers....lol. Other than that, that is all I do coupon wise.  :P

I haven't seen the show Extreme Couponing.....but from what I have read in this thread about and the extremes that people go to just get coupons, I think I will check it out one day just to get a laugh!  ;D

I have never seen it but heard of it.  From the looks of these posts, it almost sounds as extreme as "Hoarders," which I had to stop watching because it made me sick. LOL  Maybe I should check this show out.  Coupons can definitely come in handy if it's something you already use.

I watched it last night too.  The thought of spending 5 hours preparing for your shopping trip and 5 hours at the checkout made me think those folks must be nuts.  I know they are saving money but their time should be worth something.  I may have heard the number wrong but one of the women said she had something like 1,400 rolls of toilet paper under her son's bed.  Hoarding sounds like a really good definition to me.   ??? ???

I watched a few minutes of it last night and I'm still confused how those people do it. I remember when I was younger that my mom and her boyfriend would use coupons. I just wish I knew where to get the coupons and how to get started with all this coupon stuff LOL.
Title: Re: Have you seen the show "extreme couponing"?
Post by: mawhite63 on April 08, 2011, 06:48:20 am
Well, the people on the show I would definitely classify as hoarders, just my opinion.

But really, why so much toilet paper?

And this is one of her kid's rooms. Must be great having a friend over. "C'mon up to my room, ignore the toilet paper"

I think the difference between these people and the ones you see on Hoarders or Hoarding is the coupon people all seem to be super super organized. I just don't understand how some of them do this and work at the same time. It seems to me this is like a full time job.

I didnt see the show but I heard a little bit about it.  I am a coupon clipper and frequently use coupons but I dont understand buying 400 of the same thing that you will never use!   That makes no sense to me!!!....Whats the difference in stockpiling all of that stuff vs hoarding????????

I have seen the show. I clip coupons but have never done it to that extreme. The average person could never do that. The money they spent for the amount of groceries they got makes me wonder if it can possibly be real.

It was just plain greedy to clean out the shelf of something like 63 bottles of mustard.  Her husband says he doesn't even like mustard.  My stores around here do not do double coupons, except for one, which will take up to 5 double coupons on Wednesday.  I have also been doing some reading on different blogs about the show.  They said that the one gal in the high heels used to have a video showing how you can cheat at the register with your coupons.  She developed a system where you substitute coupons with similar product codes.  This should be considered as fraud.  They said that looking at her groceries, it did not look like she bought some of the things that she had coupons for - she substituted higher money off coupons for some products.  I guess you might get by with that when you buy so many carts full of stuff, but my grocrey store would not let me get by with that.  I have been questioned a few times with a coupon and had to prove that I purchased the product.  I have also been told that a certain coupon did not cover the product I bought (I did it by mistake, not trying to get by with something).  I usually keep my purchased coupons back in my envelope before checkout, but once or twice a coupon has gotten in the envelope and I had not purchased the product.  The checker gave me back the coupon.

I've never seen the show, but I agree with others who say it is fake. Most of the coupons I have say you can't combine them with any other coupons, so that part of it is really fake. Besides, you are not really saving anything when you spend hours and hours doing this stuff. And I agree that the people who hoard stuff they will never use are selfish, and should be sharing with poor people.

OK, well, first off I'm mad that I lost my receipt from yesterday, because I wanted to be able to give exact numbers, but I'll do it from memory.

I did a little over $15.00 in coupons yesterday from Walgreens so I was pretty excited. I decided I wasn't going to buy anything that I wouldn't already use, because that would be wasteful, but I was only going to buy items that were in the sales circular. I used the Walgreens coupons from the insert and I had two coupons for other items that were on sale. The total before tax was a little over $36.00, so at 42% savings I was really happy.

I used coupons before, mostly for pet items or for things I bought every week, but this was the first time for me planning a shopping trip around only sale and coupon items. I'm actually kicking myself a bit because I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. I just always assumed it was cheaper to buy the store brands.

I still think some of the people on that show are nuts to stockpile so many items, but in a way I'm grateful to them, because they taught me something. I'm going to start planning mid-week shopping trips revolving around only coupon and circular items. I'm still only going to buy things that I actually use on a regular basis, but I think that the mid-week shopping in the end will wind up lowering my overall groceries. And it's not like I'm not running to these stores mid-week to pick up things we ran out of anyway.

I just saw the show for the first time last night. That was really amazing; I saw the one where the woman got $600 worth of groceries for only $6. Some of the things I could actually see... For some vitamins that were on clearance, she had a coupon that took off more than the price of the vitamins, so she actually made money by purchasing the item; so even where she not to use the vitamins, it'd still be worth it to "purchase" the item in order to make money!

I've actually done a little "extreme couponing" myself... The store that I shop at will sometimes have large appliances for sale and if you purchase the item, the store will give you at least the purchase price worth of coupons. So I've done this twice: once for a small chest freezer and the second time for a new grill. Each time I was really looking to buy the major item, so when the store had this offer, I jumped at the chance. The first time I was a little afraid that the coupons that I'd get would be like a BOGO coupon, so I'd have to spend even more money to get the savings, but it turned out that none of the coupons were like that. Most coupons gave you the item for free (without needing to make any additional purchase) or the coupon would have a large savings that combined with the store's sale price that week, the cost was free or very close to it. Also almost all of the items were something I'd use, tho I may not normally have purchased were it not for the coupon (eg some pre-sliced ham was normally more expensive than just getting a half-a-ham and having the deli slice it for me, but because I had the coupon for the pre-sliced ham, I purchased that instead)...

And one time I actually made money by shopping... There was a store that had AA batteries on sale with a mail-in refund that made the total cost $0 (limit of 3 packs). I also had a coupon for $0.50 off a pack of batteries (limit of 6 packs). So I ended up getting 3 packs of batteries and actually made $1.50 in the process! I was surprised that neither coupon nor refund had a statement like "not valid with other offers"; I was so sure that I wouldn't get the refund check because for some technicality that would disallow it, but the check did come, and I happily pocketed the $1.50! I've heard that sometimes after holidays or on Black Friday / Cyber Monday you can sometimes do something similar and make money on the clearance / sales priced items.

I saw the show last week and boy did they have a lot of stuff.  One family said they had enouht on hand to feed them for 3 years.  Seem like some of the stuff would go bad before they used it all up.   I have a friend that does that with health and beauty aid and other non food items and then about once a year has a yard sale.  She makes good on that.

I saved over $47 at Target yesterday between coupons and their 5% off Visa Red card.  I did spend $100, but wasn't going for just a coupon savings trip.

These shows have to be scripted.  What store has over 60 containers of mustard or 200 toothbrushes on stock.

This show is truley extreme. My concern is that alot of the stuff that is purchased is unhealthy. How does these people buy all  of these items and they dont have spoliage. Especially when u dont have a big family. It is interesting to watch. I like coupons and I use them to. We are a family of 5. Me, hubby and 3 kids. We can really benefit from. One family had a 140 rolls of tissue. Now thats extreme for real.

It's pretty bad.   :(  Even the experts don't know how people go from compulsive shopping or clutter into hoarding.

I've thrown out lots of food, toiletries, and clothes that she bough by the case in the 1990s.

Title: Re: Have you seen the show "extreme couponing"?

Clearing the shelves of stuff they don't even use is somewhat anti-social.

I was psyched when RiteAid was offering the Tylenol Precise for $5.00 on sale, and SmartSource had the $5.00 off coupon making it free. When I went to the store though, they were all gone. A super sweet sales rep saw me looking on the shelves, and she came over and said if I was looking for the Precise, they were hiding it behind the counter at the pharmacy for people who really wanted it. She said the day the sale started, this lady came in at midnight on the dot, and bought everything off the shelf, and then went to the manager and tried to place an order for 40 more

I mean, c'mon. I know free is free, but 60 bottles of pain relief gel? Really?

Some of the store staff in the area really are offended by a lot of the behavior they're seeing. Especially the clearing the shelves bit so that other people can't buy it.

Yes I saw one episode, and it was pretty freaky. It seemed like an obsession for all of them. The "stock piles" were laughable- did you see all the toothpaste that one guy had?! Is he going to use all of it? No. They also bought complete crap that other people would never buy in the first place. The only people on the show that I liked were the ones that donated to charities and the military.

I have a love hate relationship with the show, I really think that their savings are over exaggerated. Many of the people admit to purchasing the coupons online or printing them at home, but that cost isn't figured into the equations at the end of the show. If you think about someone getting 50 free sticks of deodorant, but it cost them a $30 printer cartridge to print all the coupons then  the deodorant isn't completely free. Without a doubt they are still getting a phenomenal deal but they should consider all costs at the end of the show when they give you the final amount of savings. And the time these people invest in finding, cutting and organizing the coupons is absurd, in my opinion.

its possible to use double coupons on items that are 'sale' and the total could actually go negative in which the store usually just does not give any money but all your items were free.

I have seen the show and have only seen 2 people do some good with what they get; the buy truck loads of stuff and keep what they need and then they give the rest to food shelves and charities!!!

I love it!   I wish my wife had a bit more tendency for this.....   Her idea of extreme couponing is believing the BOGO deal at the store is a good deal!

Well, it is! Free is free :) Add them all up at the end of the year, and that's a good savings, especially the Walgreens and RiteAid BOGOs

You could help shop with her, and start the coupon book. Once you get started, it's very addictive

Its a great show. The stock piling did throw me off tho. I figured like damn if I can go to the store and get $200 worth of groceries for $10 I'd be happy enough with that lol. But they have stock piles of stuff that they'll probably never use in their lifetime. Alot of the stuff could be donated. I did see one gentleman on the show that donated like 200/300 boxes of cereal to a shelter. That i thought was a great thing to do.

I think that using coupons is a great idea and you can get some good deals and stuff for free once in a while but because of that show stores are changing their policies and normal people that use coupons every day are going to suffer because of it. I think it's a little ridiculous that these people hoard these products and will probably never use them all in their lifetime. A lot of the products they get for free are processed foods, not a lot of fresh or even frozen foods, which would be a lot healthier.
If they get this stuff for free like that they should donate it to shelters and places that need things like that, that would be more useful. i think the one guy on the show did that and it was nice to know he was helping out.
I use coupons but I could never devote time like that to it. I'm happy to get my $.50 off on a product i know I will use or need

I never understand why stores won't let people use the internet coupons. They pay them back just as fast as the other kind.

Yes, I watch that show a couple of times. Is it true? Is it possible? What websites do they visit to get so many coupons? And get everything almost free!

yes but Im mad I only saw the ending part of the show. Perhaps I will catch a rerun.I didnt get how they can use so many coupons for the same product when most coupons say Limit one per product

The one per product means that you can only use that coupon to buy one item. So if you have 20 coupons in your hand you can buy 20 items. :)  It works best when something is already on sale or if you are lucky enough to live somewhere that doubles coupons. There is not a single store in my city that does this anymore so I wouldn't be able to get as great of deals as they do on the show but I am going to try harder to match coupons with sales and see what I can do.

I've seen the show a few times .. different shoppers.  They definitely are "over the top"!  I use any coupon I get my hands on, ONLY if it's something I purchase anyways.  I never use coupons just to "save" money LOL..  :dontknow: how do you save money when you're spending it just to "save" ?? No, I don't need to stockpile.  I do stock up so that I can continuously watch for sales and use my coupons accordingly.  I try to buy only when it's on sale, and with my coupons. I live alone, and definitely do not need 2-4 rooms full of items not needed in the near future. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it
