Title: Diet Question
Post by: pamela32280 on March 01, 2011, 08:59:06 am
I'm working on losing weight and getting fit. I do a great job during the day watching what I eat, I run most days and do the elliptical machine at the gym and the machines....but here's the problem. At night I eat like a crazy person. I try so hard not to but I just do it. How do you stop the night time munchies?

The best way would be to have enough self control to resist, but if you can't do that, then the next best thing to do is to remove the night time munchie foods from your home.  If they aren't there, you can't eat them.  Replace them with vegetables (best) or fruits (okay) if you absolutely have to eat something.  I wouldn't recommend taking pills unless it's the last resort; it is best if you change your lifestyle while you are trying to lose weight, so the weight stays off longer and you stay healthier.

I'd agree with snack on something healthy and avoid the junk food. I'm a big tea drinker and drinking all of that water throughout the day helps keep me full and helps with the night cravings.

I've never really been much of a night time eater. I just don't keep a lot of food in the house, that seems to fix a lot of problems. And only snack foods I do keep are things like apples and carrots.

It gets easier over time. Just remember it is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. It took you years to develop these bad habits, they will not go away overnight.

i like to munch too, but my trick is to gorge on the
healthy stuff! go ahead, eat yourself silly on some
grapes (i love to dip 'em in low-fat yogurt if i have
any) or stuff your face with a sliced orange, celery
sticks with a small dab of peanut butter, and a
banana...

that's how i beat the system, lol. reverse psychology
on the fat!

Also, their dessert items are pretty low in calories and they taste great.

I didn't stop eating what I wanted to, but it is all about portions. I cut back on how much I eat. Then I try to spend about 30 minutes 6 days a week on the gazelle! Lost about 15 lbs in 2 months....

I totally understand where you are coming from.  I have such a great appetite...  I have been on the elliptical 6 days a week for around 30 min a day for about 2 months.  I have lost 7 pounds.  I LOVE to eat but I have started eating much healthier and only eat desserts on special occasions and on Sunday's  I eat a bowl of cereal and we have one big meal at noon including dessert but nothing after that.  I sometimes will snack on a 100 calorie bag of popcorn or maybe celery, broccoli or something like that. I'm not going to lie it is hard not to snack but you just have to settle in your mind and when the urge comes .... eat a veggie or drink a glass of water or hot tea.  GOOD LUCK ;)

I'm working on losing weight and getting fit. I do a great job during the day watching what I eat, I run most days and do the elliptical machine at the gym and the machines....but here's the problem. At night I eat like a crazy person. I try so hard not to but I just do it. How do you stop the night time munchies?

The reason you might me hungry at night is because you maybe restricting your meals during the day. Here some tips that may help you  with your problem.

1. Never skip breakfast in fact eat a large one. If you skip breakfast you'll gorge later in the evening.
2. Instead of eating only 3 meals a day, increase it but eat smaller portions.
3. Snacking is okay & it helps if the sneak is healthier but junk food is okay too just in smaller portions.
4. Increase you water in take. You'll feel fuller if you drink more water daily. It will also help you keep hydrated & helps with flushing out impurities out of your body.
5. Don't buy these snacks, if it's not here the temptation will not there either.
6. If you're starving your self during the day, you'll gorge at night. When you starve yourself your body will go into reserve fat mode & whatever you eat no matter how small that food will be converted to fat. It's a survival mechanism from the caveman's day during the lean times when food is scarce.
7. Walking daily will help with weight loss.
8. Have plenty of sleep. Studies have been done where if you get enough sleep, it will help you slim down.
9. Don't be hard on yourself it you fail. Forgive yourself & try again.
10. Don't change the type of foods too quickly. For example: if you're a meat eater & eat a lot of meat, gradually add vegs to your diet & gradually decrease the amount of meat you're eating. If eat too much junk food, gradually replace it with healthier food. If you push to fast in this, you'll rebel & you'll end up worst off.

I've tried to lose weight for along time & failed every time. I failed because I would always dump on myself about not being strong enough. I decide to fool my brain so that I don't end up making myself fail. I gradually, increased my vegs & gradually decreased meats. I walk at least 3 times each week. I try to get some sleep. Use weights to strengthen my arms at least once a week. The more muscle you have more your body will be able to burn fat. I snack with both junk food & healthy food. If I get hungry late at night, I usually curb it by  eating a fruit or drinking something to fill me up. Most importantly, I don't get mad at myself if I do fall of the wagon. Losing weight slowly is better than losing it quickly because you'll just end up gaining it all back & then some.  I tell myself that I'm not on a diet. That I'm eating the same as before. This helps to trick your mind & you'll not fail on purpose. Like a lot of us on diets do to ourselves.

air popped popcorn is a great healthy snack. Just stay away from the butter & salts.  I eat mine plain or use a few sprays of the spray butter just for a touch of flavor.  or you can try a small bowl of cereal (Honey bunches of oats) is a healthy Cereal always fills be up at night.

You just do it.  I never really tried this, but I read in a magazine once that if you just envision the results you can achieve by not eating like that at night it might help.  I like to post encouraging quotes or pictures where I will see them frequently to keep me motivated or maybe listen to a certain song frequently to keep me motivated.  It's really all about will power.

Drink a lot of water and try to distract yourself at night by watching a movie with a friend that knows you are on a diet.

Drink way more water. Lots of water helps keep the stomach feel full and is good at flushing the system of the foods that your body does not eat. Also as others have mentioned before eat 6 small meals instead of 1 big one.
