Title: Need a Christian Explanation
Post by: walksalone11 on March 27, 2011, 03:44:39 am
There is a verse in your bible that says some thing to the effect of "Sins of the Father are punishable down to the 7th generation".
I can almost guarantee that I probably butchered that verse, from ignorance rather then intent......my apologies.

Can some of you provide the correct terminology as well as your interpretation of it, please?

thank you.

I'm not sure about what that verse means in the Bible, but I suspect that it ties in with the Samurai code that the Japanese people live by and which explains why there was absolutely no looting after the Japan disaster. If a Japanese citizen steals from a storekeeper, for example, he or she is shamed publicly by that action by the government and by all of the citizens. Not only he or she is shamed, though, but so are his ancestors and his descendants for seven generations!

Thank you. Yes many of the Indigenous Nations of this continent, including mine, have similar beliefs.

This particular verse is referring to idolatry
You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,

God was telling his people that their children would be effected by their parents disobedience and hatred towards God. Children who grow up seeing an example of idol worship are going to follow suit and thus fall into the same disobedience. This type of behavior took many generations of children in order to be weeded out. We are not punished for our parents' sins but we do often feel the repercussions of their acts even into the great great grandchildren.

Hope that helped.  :)

You are exactly right and must have the archetype of "getting to the heart of the matter". My wife read me the same passage shortly after I made my initial post. She is also very savvy about finding Bible verses, from many years of spiritual practice. Thank you for verifying that for me! Have a wonderful day!

In my understanding, we can sometimes draw upon the spiritual beliefs of other cultures to help us understand and interpret the teaching of our own Messiah Code of Conduct which is reflected in the teachings of Christ in the Bible. Perhaps if someone knows exactly where that quotation appears in the Bible, that might help us to understand the context and that in turn could shed more light on the question at hand. Now, this is only my opinion, but it sounds an awful lot like the Divine Law of Cause and Effect to me. The question might be: what is the sin being referenced here? Won't some of you Bible-totin' Christians weigh in on this members's question? Waiting on you now.

After recently studying on Japanese religions I can tell you there is no connection between the samurai code and the Bible. While we can look at the two and say they are simular, assuming there is a connection or influence is completely ridiculous. I read a book on comparative religion by a doctor who made the same such assumptions. The human brain, while quite complex, is exactly that, a human brain. Therefore humans having the same thoughts or ideas can be common and not always connected. Making these kinds of assumptions is how people become mislead or misinformed. The bible, as it states, is a diction from God and bears no influence from any other cultures, or religions.

Thank you for your due dilligence when answering this question. People like your self, are why there is a reason to sometimes believe what you hear. Although I think everyone should seek answers for themselves, you brought the information right from the source and did not make any guess or assumptions that inturn misinformed or mislead anyone. So, once again, thank you for your help and time.

Hey no problem guys. But I had to search out the answer to that verse myself awhile back. It takes much more learned minds than mine to understand some of things in the bible.

@mwhenry

I don't think rbud meant to mislead anyone, he just gave his thoughts on the issue but didn't claim to be 100% sure that he was correct. When I don't really know the answer, I do the same thing. As long as we can be honest about what we are saying then it's all good.

Oh I know, I was just thanking you for actually looking up the answer instead of just guessing or misleading anyone.

I wasnt saying thats what he was doing, I was just adding to it by saying there was no correlation between the two. His reply was an example of the types of things people do to misinform other people. The doctor who wrote a book on it di d the exact same thing. I was enfuriated when reading it because it was a statement that based on opinion. His opinions others read and believe to be fact and thats why there are so many people who are misinformed. Religion is not a topic that people should be misinformed and thats why I plead with everyone to go to the source!

Thank you for the clarification. You are correct and I removed my post. Sorry if I offended you. It was not my intent. From now on, I will keep my spiritual musings to myself. I apologize.

if you need an explanation of Christianity, go to youtube and search "the greatest story never told" by Zeitgeist, it has 3 parts and you will fall off your chair when you hear the truth about Christianity.

NO ONE SEES THINGS THE SAME AS OTHERS....OUR OWN LIVES INFLUENCE HOW WE INTERPRET THE BIBLE, THE WORLD, THE WARS UNEMPLOYMENT...BUT I THINK THAT GOD WOULD FORGIVE ALL OF US BECAUSE HE IS KIND AND GOOD.  I DON'T THINK HE WOULD PUNISH MY CHILDREN FOR THE BAD THINGS I HAVE DONE :peace:

That is from the old testament, and really, it doesn't matter if you word it correctly if you get your point across and you did a good job.  Before each individual could be saved and cut generational curses, the curses continued through the generations.

simple- Generational curses. things that you father has done that requires punishment is capable of falling down the generational line to you, your son, your son's son, etc. For instance: Poverty is probably one of the biggest and most talked about generational curses in the Bible. And is still around today.

I don't know if there is a Christian Explanation, however, I feel like the sins of at least four past generations are biting me on the butt right now...
