Title: If Electricity Dies
Post by: ULuvCeCe on April 08, 2011, 07:36:37 am
How do you think you would do if one day our electronic grid was wiped?

In February I had major ISP Issues, last month I had to replace the water heater (it's a combo that also heats the home), and this week my chk trans light went on and my hard drive crashed on my desktop, what do they all have in common? They all require electricity AND technology to work!

I sometimes wonder if this is a way to prep me for something bigger as I rely on electricity and technology very heavily. I am 26 so not old but old enough to remember:

- before computers, call waiting, dvr, cellphones
- we had a rotary phone, record player, atracks, vhs, cassettes
- I know how to add/subtract/multiple/divide without a calculator

But there are so many people who have no idea what life was before. And I cannot imagine life of people in the 1940's-50's even. What if we revert?

My hope is that one day we all wake up to the fact that our over consumption and reliance on fossil fuels is dooming our descendants, other wise my hope would be that the entire present system self destructs and forces us all to act right.

I don't think the electric grid will ever completely die - but really, 40's and 50's?  Electricity dates back long before that.  I don't see life without electricity as a possibility - but assuming it did happen, I think quite a few people would freak out and have a bit of trouble surviving.

life would just slow down to a livable pace - look out, you might enjoy it. I remember the 50's. when neighbors visited one another, the neighborhood kids played ball, or cards or just had a good time hanging out. before technology. I think I would enjoy those days again, but not sure if I want to go so far as to not have any electricity... ha ha...

Yes, Electricity dates back to the first lightning strike  ;) If you read what I wrote....
I cannot imagine life of people in the 1940's-50's even.
I was just stating that I can't imagine how it was in those times, I can only recall my life in the 80's through present

Use solar or wind power. It is safe and cleaner and more reliable

If the electric grid crashed thou, how would the solar panels and wind blades be made? I guess wind blades could go back to the really small metal wind mills but I would definitely feel for the person having to cut that by hand. I am with you thou, we need to become more responsible with our usage of items.

Part of being responsible is insuring that you prepare yourself for emergencies.
The powers that be count on peoples habit of totally relying on them for pretty much all necessities....great method of controlling you.
After the lights go out isnt the time to start thinking about what to do.

If you surrender your every need to others then you accept their total control of deciding what those needs will be.

Economy, government corruption blah blah blah......if you dont have the skill to plant nurture and harvest a tomato plant, knowing what you know now, then next year you still havent took the initiative to acquire these skills.....well you get to sit there mouth watering, watching me enjoy my t'mater sammitch  ;D

Note to spell check.....DONT TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!!

I remember several years ago when tropical storm Jean hit Puerto Rico and it completely knocked out our electricity and the pumping system to get our water supply. We were like that for a whole month and a half. If we wanted to take a shower, brush our teeth, etc. We had to go to someone's house about 45 minutes away. Apparently, they weren't affected by the tropical storm. If it wasn't for that, we would have been stinking like I don't know what. I can't even imagine not taking a shower in Puerto Rico with that scorching heat. The only way we could get power to the home was with a back-up generator and it was so damn noisy that we shut it off at night when we were going to sleep.  So yes, I know what it's like not to live with electricity. It was truly an experience that I won't ever forget.

I think it would be hard at first if suddenly there was no technology. But I believe we would adapt.  Humans as a whole have always been able to adapt to change in their enviroment.

Well I would do as others before me have done.....adapt and make due with what I got!  It worked for everyone before electricity and the amish do it everyday!

We would go back to the days when we had no electricity and use fire for light, cooking, etc.

Presumably, you meant that you are totally off the local powergrid wherever you are and not off the information grid, (the internet).  The reason the obvious was mentioned is because the 'net is powered by national energy grids and a widespread loss of this power source would bring the 'net down, thus affecting you indirectly.  Other indirect effects of a widespread power loss would affect people and things that do impact those who are "totally off-grid". The secondary and tertiary consequences would multiply expotentially in such a scenario.

I do not think this is a possibility. There are so many ways that power is produced, it seems impossible that they would ALL fail at the same time.

However, if anyone wants to explore options if this happens, there is a book called "When Technology Fails" that offers solutions to problems that would arise.

So True: Take out the satelites, power grid and no more internet. No more cell phones, can't pump gas at the gas stations and the damn clerks don't know how to make change, so forget getting groceries. Ha

Even with backup generators then, (since they too need some power source), once the grids go so goes the internet - whether or not a user is living off of the direct power grids.  Current levels of solar power, geothermal, wind-power and 'bio-fuels' might provide a diminished grid however, these would have to be expandedsignificantly to carry the current power loads.  That's going to be expensive in a recession economy.

My mom was born in '35. They didn't have electricity to the farm where she lived until she was 14. She got her first TV at the age of 25.
