Recently, I saw a couple parking spots that were reserved for expecting mothers and thought this was a great idea! Expecting moms do not meet the recommendations of using a handicapped spot, but often having difficulty with long walks and carrying large objects (especially in the 3rd trimester). I think every large parking lot should have a few spots reserved for these women! What do you think?
-
They should not get reserved parking spots for a choice they made. The handicap didn't choose to be handicap.

So if they accidentally became pregnant you're saying that it was their choice because what they had sex? But it is ok if a guy got into a car accident and became paralyzed because hey he didn't chose that.... but he chose to drive the car. Double standard in your way of thinking if you ask me.
As for the original question, I think it is nice of places to have expectant mother or new mother parking. Babies R Us does it and so do a few malls in my area, it is very courtesy of them.

I'm simply saying that it's a kind gesture. Many women choose to bear children and could reap the benefit of this. Personally, I'm thankful women make that choice! I'm certainly grateful that my mother did. ;)
-
YES THERE SHOULD BE. PREGNANT WOMEN ALREADY HAVE TO GO THRU ENOUGH. CLOSER PARKING SHOULD BE INN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
-
Being pregnant does not make a woman disabled, although it certainly feels that way. All that walking/waddling makes things move along, exercise is good for both mother and baby :)
-
no cuz how do you really know if their having a baby or not ? im sure their will be fat women that will just lie and say there expecting a baby just cuz there to lazy to walk a few extra feet and its not like u can walk up to them and say u cant park there ur just fat..... dont get me wrong about big women........"do i like ladies with a little junk in the trunk? you bet your sweet *bleep* i do!"

I am not on board with giving special, closely-located, parking spots to expecting mothers. If they are too incapacitated to walk into an establishment they should get a letter from their Physician allowing them to have a temporary handicap tag in their vehicle. As was mentioned before...excercise is good for mother and baby. A co-worker excercised right upuntil the day before she had her baby and had a seven hour labor period with no complaints. My sister went the opposite way...ingesting any junk food she could find and putting a permanent indentation in her sofa and had a 26 hour labor that she still complains about 8 years after the fact. Doctors believe in the benefit of excercise and would rarely hand out a script for handicap parking for expecting mothers.

I have to say I'm just not in favor of it. I think a marketing ploy for stores like Babies R Us showing fake concern.
Yes I've been pregnant and yes I know how exhausting it is at the end, but guess way? It was my choice to get pregnant to begin with. Anyone who is so weak that they can't walk a few extra yards into a store can either have someone else shop for them, or wait until after the baby to do the shopping. As far as carrying things out, the stores will do that for you.
Those spots are abused. You'll see women who don't appear to be pregnant at all using them.
-
To be honest, I'm not sure. I've only seen this in one place I shop at (Best Buy) and it doesn't seem to take away space for anyone else, but it also doesn't seem to be used very often. I also haven't exactly heard many pregnant women calling for parking spaces close to stores, so I never thought of it as a major need. :dontknow:
-
yes i agree with this. pregnant women do have trouble with doing things and they should be awarded parking spots up front from the store so they dont have to walk so far.
-
It does get very uncomfortable during pregnancy, but I see no point in doing that when the spots could be better utilized for those in wheelchairs, etc., or otherwise handicapped. Pregnant women do walk, after all. Of course, we all know that probably half the handicapped stickers were obtained under false pretenses. Grrr.
-
Yes! there should be more parking for expecting mothers. I know there is only one store shopping store in PA that is using three of ten handicap parking spots for expecting mother and mother with toddlers. This is a very good idea. I wish the stores had this idea when I was expecting.
-
Yes, it's not only parking for pregnant women, it usually includes parking for women with small children. When you have 2 toddlers and a baby in a carrier, it is very hard to walk. You can't just have someone go to the store for you.
-
I have seen these parking spots and as a mother of 5 think its a great idea.
-
Yes, I think having more nearby parking for expectant mothers is not only a terrific idea, but is also very thoughtful and considerate of their needs.
-
I think thats a nice jester, but hard to prove if the woman is overweight, not to mention the fact that some women just dont show that much when pregnant.

I am a huge fan of parking for pregnant women and although I've never seen parking for women with small children, I would be a fan of that too. My pregnant days are over, but there was one store that had parking for expectant mothers when I was also expecting and I majorly appreciated the kind gesture and purposely went to that store more often than others because of the close parking especially when I was pregnant and had toddlers in tow.
There will always be people who will try to abuse the system and pretend they are pregnant, just as there are fake handicap people abusing the handicap parking privilege. However, I would never want to do-away with a program because a few abuse it. It is a gift to help others in need whether a permanent one or temporary one and I would be grateful to receive it if I were in need.

I just saw an "expectant mother" parking spot the other day. It was the first time I had seen one. I think it is a good idea. At least with a pregnant woman, you can know for sure the spot is used by the correct people unlike so many others. I personally know people who receive disability because they are very obese. Why should they have a special parking spot and an expectant mother not?
-
Not to sound like a pessimistic or rude person but I really don't think expecting mothers need a close up parking space. Exercise is good especially during pregnancy. A little walk never hurt anyone and I think that logic is also true for expecting mothers. I will say that if someone is due in a week or less than being out in general is a risk and parking would not lower that risk. I remember I did a project 2 years ago for my child development class about health issues for a expecting mother and it said most woman are considered obese during pregnancy because of limited activity and that limited activity highers the risk or worsens diabetes, morning sickness, back aches. My point walking from a parking space to a store shouldn't require special parking for a expecting mother.
-
I used to think that pregnant women or women with infants should have a space to park up front or maybe a temporary handicapped sticker. But the fact is they are not handicapped! If you did that then what about the person with a sprained ankle or awful back ache. Or what about the single lady with lots and lots of bags to carry and no-one to help her? Where do you draw the line?
-
Pregnancy is Not a handicapp, so why in the world would they take spots from truly handicapped people for a pregnant woman???? Just saying...
-
I think it is a cool idea but... walking is good for you when you are prego. I worked everyday i was prego. I was even working the day I went into labor luckily I worked at the hospital. If the women is a high risk but not on bed rest then yeah, but if everything is smooth sailing then they can walk. They are prego not broken. I hated being treated fragile when I was prego, I worked, went to school and even moved, and I had a quick easy delivery. And my boy is healthy too.
-
i personally think that is a great idea i am an expecting mother myself and going to certain stores on the weekend is impossible to get a close parking spot. i usually have to park far away and walking in this heat is quiet tireing by the time i get in the store i have forgot what i was going to get and i really am not in the mood to walk aroun the store and look for what it was that i needed!
-
I don't think their should be I was pregnant for three years in a row and the walking did me good to keep my weight down. If they are that bad that they need a handicapped sticker then the doctor would most likely have them on bed rest. When my daughter was pregnant with her twins the doctor had her exercise until he put her on bed rest to keep the twins in till they were full term.
-
I really don't care if they do or don't.
-
i've seen this at a few different places and i personally like the idea
i think it's a privilege that some would abuse, of course,
but that's to be expected with nearly anything -
i think it would be handy and helpful for those who actually need and deserve it.
