They need to learn the Power of Forgiveness.  No matter what my family has done to me I will never turn my back on them

I believe it a matter of hurt feelings.  I am watching it in my family and I see how one person is hurt beyond words and they have cut their mother out of their life totally.  I have tried to talk to this person about forgiving the mother but they will not budge.    Forgiveness is not something they are willing to give at the moment, but I am sure they will in time.

They say, "Time heals all wounds." Plug ahead the best you can. Talk about your old flame and the feelings involved when you need to and get used to the idea that this person will be a part of your in a different way. Every day that goes by will make it easier to realize this.

Hang in there and keep your chin.

Shut down feelings can make you very sick.   The healthiest thing to do is to iron out your differences - talk out your feelings and move on.  Emotions are energy: if you bottle them up inside you they make you very sick!
