Title: What do you do with pennies? Need help!
Post by: Kiki1992 on September 21, 2011, 10:15:50 pm
So, I have this little box of pennies only. I have no idea what to do with them, but I need change to use every now and then like at bus station or train station, but the pennies take too long to put through a bus slot.

Anyone collects or knows how to handle pennies? Any idea how I can use them without dragging the whole box around and taking forever to pay like a $2 fair?

I was also wondering if there is some place I can get cash in exchange.

Help!

I save my change too and when I get a good bunch of it I take it to the bank and deposit it.

I suggest just keep them how they are, keep collecting pennies, you can't really exchange them if you only have about $2 of it.

Who knows you might need it in the future.

I usually collect up my pennies and when I have enough, I take it to the bank and turn it into cash that way.

I keep a coin jar in my kitchen, and when it gets filled, I cash them in at a Coinstar. You can go to Coinstar.com to find a location near you. I used to get the cash, but now I transfer them into a Kroger shopping card because that has no fee.

I take my spare change to the bank every now and then. A little extra in my savings never hurts.

Our grocery store has a machine that takes coins and gives you a paper receipt for the amount you put in minus 10%.   I don't have the patience to roll coins!   But you could do that - roll coins and turn the rolls into a bank.

Just roll them up when you feel bored. Pennies are still money so take them somewhere to spend.

I have a quart jar on my dresser an my husband and I throw all of our spare change into it. When the jar is full we take it to the bank. It is amazing how much can be saved and you do not even miss it!

Our grocery store has a machine that takes coins and gives you a paper receipt for the amount you put in minus 10%.   I don't have the patience to roll coins!   But you could do that - roll coins and turn the rolls into a bank.

My bank doesn't want you to roll the coins; they have a machine counter (similar to those in the stores) that they use to count out the coins. They will either give you cash or can deposit it directly into my account. Another friend of mine doesn't use a brick-and-mortar bank (he uses Ally), so he either has to use the machine at the store (which takes out a certain percentage as a fee) or will just ask me to make the exchange for him the next time I go to the bank.

Although when I was a little kid, I had heard a story about a guy that tried to corner the market on a particular penny (or maybe it was some other coin?). He'd pay anyone a little extra in exchange for those coins from a particular year, with the idea that as the national supply of that particular coin twiddled, the rarity would increase thereby increasing the value of those coins to the point where the value of his collection would outweigh the amount of money he lost trying to buy those coins. Unfortunately for him the Feds got tipped off by this scheme and he ended up going to jail for some federal charge. But after I heard that story, I started collecting pennies and sorting them by year. I'd raid my parents coin-purses and take out all of the pennies. I'd then wash them (which actually probably hastened their corrosion, but at that age, who knew), sort them by year and mint, and when I had enough, I'd roll them. When I left for college, my parents finally made me get rid of my "coin collection". At that point, I had accumulated over a hundred dollars worth of pennies (but I was woefully short of cornering the market on any one date  :crybaby2: )

Oh, one final thing... There is some financial guru (I think Suze Orman) that suggests to use a change system to help you save. Basically whenever you make a purchase (getting gas, groceries, lunch at Subway, happy-hour drinks, etc.), you are to use paper money only, and any coin-change gets set aside (like in a coffee can). Then at the end of the month, you deposit all of that loose change into some interest-bearing account. She (assuming it's Suze) said that you'd be surprised at how much you can save by doing this, and because it is only the coin change you aren't using, it doesn't feel like you are missing that money so it's easier mentally to save that money.

Keep them in a bin for a while and fill it up then once or twice a year take them to your bank and cash them in for bigger currency

I'll take all of your pennies!  It drives me nuts when people don't take advantage of any money.  My cousin told me one time she throws change away.  Oh the youngsters...

Banks will count and change them for you.  Might be a charge if you don't have an account with that bank.  Some stores might still have a counter and exchange place.  I can't remember if they charge for the service.  Keep in mind the pennies or other coins need to be clean before the counter will count them.  I mean like no lint or gunk on them.  I have a few pennies that I just have to keep because of that reason.

There used to be cash converters in the qrocery stores.  They take your change and convert them to a ticket for cash and then the customer service desk would cash them out.  The cash converted kept 8 cents on the dollar but if you had a lot of change it was worth haulling the cash can in.

Deposit the change at the bank; they'll convert the pennies for free. Don't use the coinstar machines, they're a rip.

I live in a small enough town that I just go to my bank and exchange change for bills.

I like the suggestion that margaret0524 posted about saving your change:

"There is some financial guru (I think Suze Orman) that suggests to use a change system to help you save. Basically whenever you make a purchase (getting gas, groceries, lunch at Subway, happy-hour drinks, etc.), you are to use paper money only, and any coin-change gets set aside (like in a coffee can). I don't save pennies. I save silver only. Most banks will do free coin exchange. Or, just spend a little at a time?

WE take ours to the coin changer at the grocery store and use the credit toward groceries.  Then you do not have to carry them around.

My suggestion is to keep saving up the pennies until you get a large amount then take it to the bank to deposit or if you want your money faster. Find one of those machines that lets you exchange your change for dollars. These are usually in grocery stores. This is what I always to and its surprising to find out how much money you have saved just by putting pennies in a box.

Absolutely!  You can either take them to a grocery store that lets you cash them in for a whole dollar amount or you can even wrap them in the penny paper cases and take them to the bank to request a certain amount of money.  After that you can just change the money you get to the change you desire.  I've done it before!

TD Bank will let you cash them in there. If you have an account it is free, if you don't I think they take 6%.

Just use the Coinstar machine at the grocery store.  It's worth the fee not to have to roll the pennies. ::)

My husband and I always save our pennies and all other loose change and wait until we fill up a pickle jar full. sometimes two jars and then take the jar to our local grocery store (Food City, Kroger etc.) and then we use the CoinStar machine which will count all of them for you. It prints a receipt and you take it to the cashier and they give you cash! This is how we pay for most of our gas!

This was very fun and it actually made me about $7. I would collect all my pennies and place them in a cup for 2 weeks. I would then pick a decade of which I thought the most pennies were from based on their condition. If I guessed right then I took the change and bought my self a candy bar. But when I didn't guess it right, I placed all the pennies in a bigger jar. I stored up all the pennies for about 2-3 months and ended up with about 7 dollars.

I have a seperate little change thing just for pennies.  I save them till the container is full and then I take them to a Coinstar or something of that sort.  Usually it is around $10.00, but hey, not bad for just throwing unwanted pennies to the side.

@Kiki1992 my local bank lets me deposit them into my checking account they just take them without me rolling them I give them an estimate they count the change in a machine then it is deposited into my account.
Some local grocery stores have change machines that will count your change and give you dollars the machines are green some walmarts have them too otherwise rall the coins and take to your local bank and get dollars this is much better than carrying around a heavy bag of pennies

I have a big old Mayo jar I use to put my pennies in, and some empty vitamin jars I use for the silver coins.  I keep them separate at the moment.  I started collecting the state quarters to see if I can get complete sets for each of my nieces/nephews as some unique gift someday.  After doing that for a while, I decided when I had the time, I'd like to get some kind of collection going with the other coins - then any I don't keep in the collection, I'll eventually take to the bank to be deposited.  Who knows when that may be... ::)

There are machines at the grocery store that I go where you can change your change for bucks, they will charge a small fee though. I do it all the time because they really add up, also you can always wrap them up into those rolls and pay with that where ever you go :dontknow:

My husband and I give our pennies to our kids.  They have a huge jar they put them in.  Whenever they get it filled up we then go to our local credit union and put them into the coin machine..its like the coinstar at grocery stores.  Our bank doesnt charge a fee like the ones in grocery stores!   They then take the receipt to the teller and she gives them cash!   They love it!

Collecting pennies is one of the many ways that I donate money  charity. In fact all of my spare change I donate to charity.I have two main charities that I donate money to. When I have a dollars worth pennies I roll them and deposit them they go toward my next check.

Rolling pennies and other coin is a great activity because it strengthens math skills for young kids especially if they've earned it or you are going to donated to charity. :peace:

Banks will convert your stash of pennies for a small charge or for free if you have an account with them.  Grocery stores have coin counting machines for a small fee.  I have three thousand pennies (I keep track with my smart phone) and plan on cashing them in when I hit ten thousand.  A penny saved is a penny earned.  Baby steps till your first million dollars!  If they are older pennies I would stop by a coin collector's store and see if you can sell them for a little more than they are worth.
