Title: Celebrating Holidays at School

How many people believe that it is alright to celebrate Holidays at school. When we were in school many years go we would have a party for the holiday and now if you celebrate holidays at school some people have a fit and contact the Principal and say they are forcing religion on their kids. When we had someone that did not celebrate the holidays they had the option of going to the school library or just stay and not participate.   What do you all think?

I think it's fine, it just has to be optional and it can't go too far or be too overblown.....

heaven forbid a parent or teacher provides
my child with free cupcakes and koolaid and
a break from the monotony of school work.

and candy canes! don't even get me started.

I always loved the "holidays" at school.  Free snacks and drinks was "for the win".

I suppose it would be best to send home "permission slips" for holiday parties now; that way parents can know what events will occur at a party, and allow or forbid their child to participate. 

But I would have hated it if my Dad had said no to Christmas parties (he would not have done so); I still have the clothespin Rudolph ornament I made in school when I was five.  It's the first ornament I've put on the Christmas tree every year for the past 22 years.   ;D

around here, they don't call it a "christmas" party, they call it a "holiday" party.  they don't call them "christma plays", they call them "holiday pageants". i don't understand how come we have to be so darned politically correct these days.  why can't we just keep it simple like the good ole days? :crybaby2:

Around here the call the celebrations "Holiday" the do have a party, but nothing Christmary, just drinks, cookies or cupcakes, and pizza.  The Elementary school does a "Holiday Sing-along" which is very popular and where all the school from 2 thru 6 grade can participate, but they make sure to sing not only popular Christmas songs, like jingle bells, and 12 days til Christmas, they also sing a cuple a Hanukas songs and I believe some Kuanza as well.  And some other songs that are not "Christmas" per se.

But like I said the whole school oves it and I have seen all type of races participate, the Hindus, the africans, the jewish and even a few muslims, it is very nice done and enjoyable.

Depends entirely on how they are celebrated.  Many people celebrate Christmas in this day and age as a secular holiday - but most don't bother to go to church around that time, of course.  Christmas, if we allow it to, will eventually go the way of Halloween (which started out with religious implications which later faded away for the most part).
